Hi!

First post, got my first PRS this week!(technically the third one, but the first were sent back due to issues with the flamed maple veneer and some minor issues I didn't feel like having on an instrument in this price range)

Anywho, I'm a little unsure of the nut. I get the feeling that the slots are a little too filed down on the lower strings and are causing some minor fret buzz aswell as some tearing on the slot of the high e. So I've been thinking about replacing it.

Now, I don't know if the one that's on there is plastic or graphite. Does anyone know?

And, if I were to shop for a new one, are there any special requirements I should be aware of? I've seen some nuts being sold as LP specific etc.

I have a luthier put a new nut on my SE’s. I use a core nut if it’s a trem guitar, or a graphtech if it is not.

I don't know what's on the Custom 24 SE, but I do know that the nuts sold by PRS separately are not the same material. I'd wager that the SE guitars use a synthetic material. I picked up two of these (because they're only sold in two-packs) to fix my Cu22 SE SH, which has the Wide Thin neck, same as the Custom 24 SE.

PRS is out of them right now, but they're available elsewhere.

Note - they are NOT filed enough. You'll definitely be doing some filing to get the slot right. I used 600 grit sandpaper and wrapped it around the string one size smaller than I intended to use (so I used a .009 to .042 set, since I normally use .010 to .046) and it came out pretty good. I'm POSITIVE there's a better way to file a nut, but that's what I came up with. I figured if I hosed it up, I had a spare and I could take it to a luthier.
