What's a fair deal for a PRS S2 Standard 24 in satin cherry burst?

Hello everyone!

I saw a PRS S2 Standard 24 in satin cherry burst for $649.99 at my local GC. Is this a fair deal for it? If yes, may I ask more info about this guitar? It has zebra pups and doesn't have the birds inlays. I mostly play metal. Would this be good for it?

Thanks!

Since you haven’t specifically said whether you’re talking new or used. Per the forum rules, price talk of new guitars isn’t allowed. Used, check sold ebay listings. Only you can decide if you’re willing to pay an asking price.

Standards in general do well for metal. Not familiar with the stock pickups in those.

I apologize. It is used at my local GC.

I agree with @sergiodeblanc . Fair store price depending on condition. Could you find one cheaper? Maybe, but you’ll need to hunt then hope it’s in good condition. That one is in front of you to try. Play it, see if you connect with it. To me, $50-100 isn’t enough money to quibble with if the guitar is great. You can always try to talk them down. In my experience, you can often times get them to at least knock the tax cost off and walk out the door at their listing price.

Did you go look and play the guitar? If you don’t like the way it plays, then the price becomes irrelevant.

Price used depends on numerous factors - condition, mods?, case candy/accessories (like gig bag/case, tools, trem arm etc) included, year of manufacture etc. I doubt you could buy a new one - even with a discount for that price so its a saving. You can at least try it and inspect it, ask whether it includes all the case candy and all accessories and decide if the guitar is worth it to you. If it doesn't gel, then even at half the price its not worth buying (unless you can sell it for profit soon after) and may well be better off putting the money elsewhere. You may also be able to talk the salesman into offering a discount too of course.

Value is different for everyone and can depend on circumstances too. If you offered me 'book' price for any of my used PRS, I wouldn't sell because the are worth 'more' to me than that but if I was 'desperate' to sell a guitar, I could well accept book price or less. If I was buying a guitar, every one would have a 'value' based on what I am willing to pay, how much I want, need or even gel with a guitar. Its not always about 'book' price but what I am willing to spend. As an example, I would NEVER pay more for relic guitar because I do not like 'relics' (unless they have been naturally aged through time and usage) and to me, I do not value the procedure to artificially relic a guitar - A beat up guitar should cost a LOT less. If you buy a guitar that's been accidentally damaged in a shop, you often get a big discount. Again though, others are willing to pay extra for that because they 'value' that differently to me. For some, $650 may well be almost be pocket money - something they could just buy the guitar and not really care if its decent or just use it as a base for modding if it doesn't meet their needs, others may well think $650 is a lot of money and saved up for month's - the equivalent of some peoples Private Stock purchases. The value of money differs from person to person as well.

Point is, you have to decide if that guitar is at the right price for you, whether you are willing to pay that much, try and negotiate a discount to a better price for you or not worth pursuing. Its purely subjective and depends on what you think and whether the guitar is worth that much to you.

Thanks to all!

The reason I ask is because I do not want to buy an overpriced used item. I am a humble state employee with a meager income. That being said, every dollar coming from my pocket should be a proper and worthy purchase. So, I do not want to buy an overpriced guitar. I only have affordable overseas made guitars right now, and it is my wish to own a US made guitar at some point in my life. I am thinking of this guitar to be my chance. I may have to unload some of my guitars to cover part of the bill for this purchase.

I have not personally seen the guitar yet as it is about an hour away and it is freezing right now where I am (-11℉). I intend to purchase it online, pick it up at my convenience, and if I don't gel with it, GC has a good return policy.

Thank you all!

Even at an hour away, it’s a worthwhile trip to go find out if a guitar is right for you. Especially if you’re selling some stuff to help fund the purchase. S2 are a great value used for an American built guitar. GC’s return policy is great but it’s always nicer to get something in your hands before buying if possible. Then you can see condition, how it plays, etc. maybe even get a discount.
