Of that list, I've only ever not done any sort of performance in the metal genre.
I didn't want to make a list a mile long and if I did I know I still would have forgotten something so I just threw out the obvious choices. You are welcome to add a different choice in your answers. Polka anybody? :)

When I'm not playing guitar, or being paid to do a gig in whatever style the client insists on, I spend most of my studio time in orchestral music. I guess you might call that Classical, though the term really refers more to an era than to describe music made with orchestra instruments, and I lean toward more modern influences.

Oh, sure, for me 'modern' is like up to the 1940s or so... ;)

But when I'm playing guitar, I most like to record textural electronica, because I'm into that, too. It wasn't a choice, so I put 'other'.

It's interesting to see what everyone's into.

However, I can't imagine any metal players taking my tone suggestions seriously!

Not that I dislike metal, I do it when I'm paid to go there, and I'll sketch out an idea for someone I hire to play. It's not my thing and I profess no expertise whatsoever. For other styles, I can offer useful suggestions from time to time.

But yes, metal players, you should NEVER take my tone advice!!!

"Actually, Les, no one takes your tone advice. Ever. People are into their own things."

"Seriously? But I know my sh!t."

"Sh!t is an appropriate word to describe how people feel about your tone preferences."

"Hmmm. Good to know!"
I knew I would forget some musical style or a few. :) What you talk of is cool to me as well. I am a thrash metal guy to the core but I love so many other things as well.

I gotta say, I did not vote because I could not vote for multiple styles! That said, I am most aligned with what @JasonE said in his response, take what has inspired me (which is across many genres) and do my best with it!! Here is the list of the songs I am currently doing and/or learning. It's only 246 so don't stop scrolling too quickly - about 70 under my belt, another 70 almost there and the other 100 or so trying to get it right or have not yet started - I guess it is mostly classic rock, country and bluesy, but mostly I am looking for something that works the mind or is just plain fun:

But I also LOVE TO FUNK!!!!!!!! And I did put out two albums of Funk in 2015 and a couple of singles in the years before and after that, but not doing it right now!!! LOVE to dance and LOVE to play music to dance to!!!!!!

Carry on as you were!!!

Polka anybody? :)

Funny story about polka. My first of many consistent road gigs was to a casino in WI where we played Friday and Saturday. We load out Sunday and during the process this ancient 15 passenger van shows up. They all get out and we talk for a minute. Turns out they're the next band. Naturally we ask "what kind of music do you play?" And they said "polka!" without so much as a thought. AND THEN they have Sunday morning polka jams on the radio in that area.

We get back to Nashville and I tell me wife (girlfriend at the time) about this and she says "oh yeah you'll have to see my grandparents' polka collection..." That's when I learned her grandfather was the first in his lineage born in the US.

So I haven't played polka but have been oddly close to it in a variety of ways.

It also wasn't long after the polka encounters I realized a lot of country songs are just polkas to the point where I can't unhear "Chattahoochee" by Alan Jackson as a polka.

You are absolutely 100000% correct...lol. That is funny. Cool thing on the family aspect as well. Makes life interesting doesn't it. :)

A smattering of Zeppelin-inspired blooz, a bit of Floyd, a whole lotta Rush, Metallica, Opeth... I think that trajectory means metal.

Oh! and concert band, marching band, and jazz band in school. Now I'm kinda confused.
So am I but you said Metallica and Opeth so I am going to walk that road with you! :)

’oddly close to polka’.

i play simplistic progressive reggae/glam music, like backing music for a lounge crooner. i never ever play acoustic guitars. when i listen back to stuff i’ve recorded, it sounds like when house djs try to play keyboards (ignorant, no chops, doesn‘t know enough chords) with more (too much) guitar and drums over it.

What musical style am I? How about incompetent!

I got into guitar very, very late in life. (Bass is my first instrument). I play guitar at church and while they like what I do I am keenly aware of how much I don't know and can't play. Honestly, if I were to join in on a jam session I would not know what to do.

But I'm 69 years old and am under no illusions of anything. Just going about it at my own pace trying to do the best I can.

Hey, it beats rotting in front of a TV all night!
