I've taken to attempting build a guitar. I've assembled parts guitars - and I love them. This, however, is a bit more challenging. This is really just a glorified kit, but with some exceptions....

The body was luthier built for me combining aspects of the Ibanez Jem, Pia and a San Dimas Charvel. The neck and fretboard were luthier built as well. The fret job is my own. It's not bad for a first try, but I have some that need more work.

It's my "Inspired by Ibanez" build. The neck is ready for final finishing. It's sitting, awaiting the arrival of the clear coat. The headstock design was hand painted with acrylic paint markers and sealed with a 2K satin clear coat sanded back 320.

The body is almost done being sanded. There are some uncomfortable areas to be sanding on this one. I gotta give props to the person who sands these for a living!! The filler primer should be here in a couple of days...

This leads to tonight's project: Finalizing the Graphic Design!!

I am handing painting this guitar, as previously mentioned. This afternoon, I traced the body, cut it out (kinda screwed up, so it's a little off), and began painting the final design. These pics show it off so far.

I'm having a blast with this. The design will wrap around to the sides. My wife is painting the back with her own design. Once all that painting is done the weather may be better for doing the clear coats.

Figuring this will be done in December/January. Thanks for letting me share!!

Anyone else enjoy "building" their own guitars?

I have just barely learned to give my own guitars a good setup. But I have been thinking about slapping together some parts to make my own thing as well. Just to see how it would turn out. Can't say that I am ready to take that step. But I have been thinking about it recently.

Nice combination of features. I always like the dissappering prymamids better than the vines!

I've built a few guitars, even one where I built the body when I had access to a wood shop, but never a neck. One day I'll endeavor to do that part.

I really like the Crimson guitars tools for doing fretwork, I find the best results are really about putting in the time and going slowly.

Kinda reminds me of Clapton's '60s SG in a way. It's gonna be pretty cool!

Thanks!! That SG has always been one that I have loved. Never thought directly about it, but it makes sense that there'd be similarities.

For me, this is a guitar I've wanted since high school (graduated 91 for reference). I had an LA made BC Rich Gunslinger and I loved the Jem. But, now that I'm 50, it's time to have the guitar I could never have from Ibanez - a single humbucker Jem with MY own painting for the graphic!!

I'm wide awake, might as well give the specs...

The body is two-piece basswood. This is one of my favorite woods. There is a richness in the mids that I like with medium output humbuckers. I like the look of the PIA over the Jem. However, after playing one, I realized I did not like the rounder body edges. Paul, the fellow that made it for me, did the edges sharper like an RG/Jem.

There are no control holes yet because I wanted to wait until I had the design for the body done.

The same fella made the neck and fretboard. Both are maple. The neck is lightly flamed, the fretboard is birds eye. The inlays are the disappearing pyramids with the colors from the PMC Jem - Purple, Green, Pink.

The neck is a 24 fret Wizard profile, 17" radius, with frets 21-24 scalloped. It'll be sporting a Gotoh top mounted locking nut along with Gotoh SG38 tuners.

The bridge is a vintage 1988 Ibanez Edge tremolo with an Floyd Upgrades brass trem block and stainless steel screws.

Electronics are still up in the air. So far, it's looking like a Duncan 78 with a PRS push/pull set up for series/parallel.

We'll see!!!

Amen to that. That's the combo on my 80's MIJ Squier superstrat: basswood with a 7.75k Pearly Gates bridge. Killer sound.

But nowhere near as gorgeous as yours. Congrats!!
