What Happened?

I blame no new limited edition silver sky!

It would be cool if they allowed a sales or trade portion of the forum! But I know that is a pipe dream.
There's a vibe (maybe a rule) that the forum discourages listing our own PRS guitars and gear that are for sale.

People here seem pretty trustworthy and mature, and it would be a nice thing to have a Buy and Sell page on the PRS forum.

I know the forum is really about encouraging people to buy NEW PRS guitars because that's how PRS survives.

But a Buy and Sell page would be nice and perhaps encourage stronger feelings of community.

I like this forum and most of the people on it a lot.

I feel some of us would be willing to even pay to have a secure way to list/buy with a forum members. But I do get it. Opens up a can of worms for people trying to steal/cheat/rob. As for buying new vs old: pretty sure PRS knows these guitars are gateway drugs. Once you get reeled in you’ll eventually buy a new one.

Well, this is a forum from PRS and they are in the business of making and selling guitars themselves. I can see where the rule comes from. ;-)

Me too. I can see both sides.

Some freshening up and some new forums here might increase activity and interest in PRS products too.

I've seen photos of Paul smiling and posing with owner modified PRS guitars.

More info on pickups, color codes, bridge, tuners and hardware upgrades, etc. would be nice to find right here on the PRS Guitars Forum rather than having to search for it. Just seems more convenient and a more user friendly thing to do.

A Do-It Yourself forum?

The Amp page here doesn't seem to get much activity. Maybe because there's not much discussion of anything other than PRS's own amps.

But again: this IS PRS's forum.

Yes, I came in a few years later and tried multiple times to “fit in.” I told the story before, but I was leaving in frustration of being completely ignored, until Sergio rescued me. It’s not like that anymore. I try, and see others do as well (especially you) to welcome new people.
I have to say as being a noob here that I was shown the welcome wagon by all and everyone so far has been really great and helpful and even put up with my posts here.
Plenty of knowledge in here and a lot of friendly folk.
At least nobody has said "get the Hell out of here" yet.
Although they may have thought it...lol.
Much appreciated on my end I can tell you .

It's a rule, not a vibe. This is what it says (look under 'Forum Rules, Read 'Em' thread):

"4. Dealers, Distributors and Forum Member Sales

The PRS Forum is an information and communication site only. Please do not post items for sale or discuss retail or wholesale pricing of any kind. If you'd like to post a classified ad, there are many established websites and forums that support gear sales."

Our hosts are PRS Guitars.

If our hosts don't want to host a used guitar marketplace - for any reason - I think we ought to respect that and not b!tch about it.

And especially this.

There are plenty of places to sell gear.
You want a PRS specific Swap & Shop? Start one. :)

Of course, PRS could take a “cut” on forum sales, and we all benefit. (As long as it’s not Reverb-level gouging ).
They get all the “cut” from NEW guitars. 100% of it. They’re buried with back orders as it is.
Why would they want the aggravation of having to deal with a classified section and waste any type of manpower to manage it?

Just a suggestion. It could be a simple model, with minimal management. Simply charge to list something, with a flat fee, sliding scale - e.g., $50 for a listing up to $1000; $100 up to $2000; etc. I bet that would generate as much, if not more, than the average sale on the PRS store.

Or not. :)

So Buy and Sell is out.

What else might drum up some interest in the forum?

What topics are you not seeing that you would like to see?

What new Q & A forums or specific discussion forum might be good?

A classified ad section would certainly generate traffic. People would register to sell something or to buy something, but not be invested in the discussion.

I have been involved with the Birds and Moons Forum, Vintage Rocker, and here. The other forums were right for their time, but I feel the current forum is more in line with today’s diversified PRS customers. They all ebbed and flowed with the seasons and product releases. I remember the BAM Forum was dead on the weekends because so many people were out playing gigs. I know some people here were involved in those other forums too, but there has been a lot of turnover in participants.

I think one major difference is the ability to go onto YouTube and learn pretty much everything about the products right away. In the old days we waited for someone to get a piece of new gear and tell us about it. Not much more can be said by us as consumers that hasn’t already been said by our favorite/least favorite gear channels.

As a relatively new addition to this group, I can offer the following. Those who post here seem well educated, well spoken and have a decent sense of humor. The discourse tone is positive (that is, generally debates are respectful and civil). But the subject matter interest starts with PRS.

PRS probably started the forum as as a marketing idea, so they probably tolerate the rest if we are seen to generate sales. Or good PR. If they (not us, because for us to do it, it would be word of mouth) want to make this more than it is, then Paul and his crew need to show up from time to time. Weigh in on stuff, even whenever we wander into non-PRS-ville (a/k/a all the talk about pre-G Mesa amps). They need to generate the interest. Paul seems pretty cool on YouTube, certainly/maybe not lacking in self-confidence, but genuinely interested in making great stuff. There seem to be a lot of real people here that they might like to hear from directly in that regard (the “we want dragon/57-08/SAS…” crowd; you know who you/we are).

If they make it a community more people might come. But do you all want that as the bad comes with the good. More isn’t always better.

Either way, I don’t generally do the forum stuff, but I like it here.

I would appreciate more involvement from the company, the employees or a representative like we see in Private Stock Friday. PRS News would be a good place to give us regular updates of comings and goings. It is PRS’s forum, but they don’t seem to put much into it in all the places I look. I find things on YouTube from the factory, I think they should be linked here by the company to be sure we see it in a timely way. I’ve tried to buy guitars and pedals that were sold out by the time it hit YouTube. Some advance notice would be nice for the PRS faithful.
