What gear or guitar have you been jonesing for lately?

A new Fender Princeton. Preferably a highly modified one.

A pedalboard for all my pedals. That'd be my 5th, but only because I have pedals that I think should be on a board as opposed to just sitting in a closet....

A new P90 guitar but probably not a PRS. Nor a Fender. Maybe an Epiphone or some other brand. Just to shake things up and try new things.

A Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50 head and cab with a Universal Audio Ox (insert gif of Homer Simpson drooling).

That very head with one of Mesa’s new 4x10 cabs is one of my daily joys (mine looks a little different because I had them make it with their custom black leather and a black grille, but it’s indeed a Fillmore 50).

I bought a set of NOS JAN GE 12AX7s and Telefunken 6L6s, and installed them. It sounds beyond wonderful!

The cab has Creambacks, but I didn’t get real leather on the cab as I did the head. I should have, though five minutes of peace here with a ‘certain someone’ was worth the small sacrifice.

Previously I used it with a Mesa 212 with Jensen Blackbirds, and it sounded great, but I felt I had enough 212s on hand, and wanted something off the beaten path. However the amp sounds good with every cab I’ve tried it with (open back, closed back, V-30s, C-90s, Blackbirds, Creambacks. It simply goes well with whatever you throw at it. Also very good master volume, and sounds great with my pedals.

It’s a lot of amp for the dough. If you get one, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I want a Helix. I've wanted one for a while. But they've been around so long now that I'm kind of wondering when a new version might drop and the old ones will start going for cheap.

I had one until this winter. It’s a great piece of equipment! Kemper is just a better fit for my skills. I bought the Helix for under $1,000 as a new, open box unit in 2021. Sold it for $1,200. Careful shopping can yield good results and it’s a very capable unit.

Is the Ox Stomp and the Ox Box the same thing? I hear people talking bout both.
The stomp box version is only a speaker emulator. The OX Box contains a reactive load attenuator that lets you drive the output tubes into that sweet spot without ear-splitting volumes. Huge price difference between the two, of course.

I've been master debating whether to get an Archon 50 combo, a JVM 215 combo, a Mesa Recto-verb combo, or a Rockerverb 50 combo. Don't get me wrong, I do love my Helix, but I also like amps. On the guitar front, I'm debating what's going to fill the gap that parting company with my SE Silver Sky Maple created. I don't know whether I'll pickup a US Silver Sky, whether I'll go for a Fender American Standard Fat Strat, or whether I'll get something totally different.

Les, is the master volume strong enough to get the amp down to bedroom levels without dulling the tone? I've always been after that magical "edge of breakup" tone, and then that also magical just after breakup tone - somewhat crunchy without being fuzzy. I can get close with my Blackstar modeler, but (and I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say this to you) there is something special about the sound and feel coming out of a set of glowing tubes driving the speakers.

So, I'm jonesing. More accurately - lusting. Can't justify the expense right now, so lusting.

Beats me!

I'm not sure I've ever played at bedroom levels.

Seriously, I dial in an amp with the master pretty wide open (depending on wattage, at least 2/3 of the way up or more), and then dial the overall volume back to what I'd consider a good recording level using the master volume. So my master's usually not lower than about 12:30 - 1:00 on the dial. I don't think most players would call that bedroom level.

However, I control dynamics and volume with my pick and guitar controls, so I don't think I play objectionably loud given that it's a studio room.

It's probably a good thing that my neighbors are old enough to be hard of hearing, because no one's ever complained about the noise.

My point about the master volume was that I can get a great sound without peeling the paint off the walls. Bedrooms, sleeping babies, angry wives who want to hear their TV? Never had to deal with that.

You'll probably want to try one out and see if it'll get your tones at volumes you're comfortable with.

I have tried the 25 watt setting a couple of times, and it sounds good, but I really like a 50 Watt 6L6 amp.

When you get down to it, I'm pretty satisfied with what I have. but of course I'm always wondering about this and that. (Darn GAS!).

I have a 2002 Les Paul Standard that I'd like to get new pickups and pots for. Other guitars I also have need the same.

I play through a Pod Go at church and while I'm pretty satisfied with it I'm always wondering if "this or that modeler" would sound better. I dialed in a great Twin Reverb sound but I cannot do the same with other amp models, like Vox and Marshall. Perhaps its me.

Still looking for the right external OD pedal to use with the Pod Go that would work best for the sound I hear in my head. What I hear is that underlying crunch with that crisp (not fizzy) high end. Think EVH's sound on VH II. I'm not trying to copy it but I like the idea of it.

All this costs money. But I'm retired and I'm trying to be very careful (especially these days) with how much I spend.

Always something on the list, though I really don’t need anything at the moment. A nice paisley 2x12 to go with the HL HXDA that didn’t cost >$1000 would be nice. I recently replaced the Archtop pickups in the white Hollowbody Spruce with a set of MJ’s MagicBuckers, so a set for the black one are on the list. If money were no object (and it always is) there would be a half dozen guitars here I’d like to try, but I’ve been on a downsizing kick lately and haven’t seen anything that makes me reverse gears yet. Really, it’s more likely I’ve been focusing on home repairs and that’s keeping me too broke to shop. Lol
