What can you tell me about the PRS P22?

I have a Gibson Custom Shop LP Custom that I love dearly, but a shoulder injury from a few years back has made it almost impossible to play for more than a few minutes without getting annoying aches and pains due to its weight of 10lbs. I recently listed it for sale/trade, looking for something comparable and was offered a 2012 Goldtop P22, with original case, papers, etc.

Can anyone tell me if I could get in the approximate area tone wise as my LP? I know the P22 has McCarty thickness, which should in theory help it get there. What are these going for? Am I losing money on this trade, and will I lose my pants if I decide to ever pass it on?

I have no idea whether you'd be getting a fair trade, because I'm not sure what your Gibson would be worth, but if you look on a place like Reverb.com you can see listing for both types of guitars. I suspect the Gibson would be worth a little more to the average buyer, so a straight trade would not be ideal for you.

The P22 will sound closer to your Gibson than it would to a Stratocaster, but it will also have a very unique tone to it, the PRS tone. The piezo will also add a dimension to the tones.

Keep in mind the P22 will still weigh over 7lbs, probably close to 8lbs. For real weight-relief you might look into a Hollowbody or a Semi-Hollow, like the semi-hollow CU22/24 from a couple years back (or was that just last year?), or the semi-hollow models in the S2 line.

I agree with skinksma. I have a P-22 and it is easily my favorite guitar, over my Gibson's, mainly due to how comfortable it is, and it plays easier, too. But, it isn't extremely light, somewhere around 8 lbs. I've been gassing hard for a goldtop PRS lately and I'd trade my non custom shop LP for it, but I'm sure the Custom Shop LP is worth a good bit more than a P22, depending on its condition. I had a dealer tell me that the P22 resale values have dropped lately, but he was also trying to sell me a CU22 and trying to maximize his profit.

My P22 has a RW neck and Ebony board with uncovered 57/08's. Fantastic guitar, but it sounds nothing like my R9.

they dont sound like Les Pauls...over all i think they sound better :) this is 2013 P-22

this is the neck/middle

this is the neck/bridge..about half way thru i switch between all positions

here it is a little quieter, One thing i love about it is how you can be really backed off on the volume, and turn it up with no pedals added and it just sings and sustains. I feel it as more responsive than other guitars. on this one the piezo is mixed in. i may take it out though. not sure.

Yeah....so gwardealy knocked it out of the park with that stuff. My experience with the P22s is that the 53/10 version, to me, was far and away the winner, but I'm assuming that a 2013 version that gwardealy used was 57/08s, so what do I know..... In any case, I'll echo what he says about how well the guitar responds go volume controls......

Agree - Check out reverb.com for potential prices. I just sold a 1980 Gibson LP Standard on reverb.com for the same reasons discussed here (too heavy and not easy to play sitting down). I don't have a P22 right now but a close friend of mine does and I have played it a number of times. It is a great guitar, very versatile and can easily cover whatever music you were playing with your LP (plus it has a piezo). It is easy to play sitting down. For light weight, I have a PRS Hollowbody I - it weighs a bit over 5 lbs (but it does have a different tone than a LP - IMHO)

WOW! I feel like I need to give a stab at that (or something like it) or give my own P22 away!

Wow Gwardealy, that sounds awesome!!! I have the p22 with uncovered 57/08's to. I love it and it is easy on the weight side. I really can't compare it to my 2012 lp robot studio other than the piezo on the P22 is better than the one on my robot. Weight is still an issue with the LP, but as far as sound p90 neck and humbker bridge is an awesome combo!!! the op's custom lp would not be a good straight up deal with the p22 unless there are other things on the P22 to up it value.

one thing i like about the PRS more than the LP is that i can get more sounds out of it...its like a LP with strat influence. The weight....yea thats a bonus. Also easier to hold if you're sitting down. Basically for me....the PRS becomes more a part of me with how it feels to hold and the sounds, than other guitars. The Piezo is a bonus. I dont even use it much for acoustic sounds, but I mix with the pickups a lot.

here is a goofy thing i did with a track i just jam over to practice...or get into playing. I edited clips from different guitars i used over the track a couple of PRS's in there
