What Are Your Favorite Amps To Play?

Joking aside, it is hard to make it sound bad. The range of the controls is not like some older Marshalls, where they really don’t do a lot. These DO, but the range is ALL musical.

I hear so much that they have their own voice, but it seems impossible to get a real feel for what the difference is.
They Do Have Their Own Voice But It Is A Great Voice And A Very Musical Voice. To Me They Seem Very Balanced And Articulate Without Ever Being Harsh Or Bland. They Are Warm Yet Still Cut Razor Sharp. They Are Not Boomy Or Spiky In Any Way In My Experience. They Have A Nice Richness And Sophistication To Them Yet Can Still Get Down And Dirty. A Wonderful Blend Of Angry Jack Daniels And Grey Poupon If You Will.

I like to mix speakers in a 2x12. In a thread at TGP a couple years ago, more than one person said that they agreed, but if you really want to try the Fanes, mix two of them rather than mixing one with another brand. Several others agreed and had a mix in there 2x and 4x cabs that they loved.

I Really Like Them On Their Own I Have Run One Cab With Them And Another Cab Of Something Else And Liked The Result. I Think A Brilliant Pairing Is The Fanes With The Tone Tubby Ceramic Hemp Cones. That Is Another Amazing Speaker IMO. I Am Not Sure They Still Make Them But They Are Wonderful Speakers...The Green Ones.

If we take a V30 Celestion as a familiar comparison, what I hear from the Fanes is a substantially thicker midrange/lower midrange that responds extremely well to gain, with a little more compression and less fizz. Thicker also than the Celestion Cream or Black Shadow 90 they make for Mesa.

Obviously there are differences model to model, and Fane makes several, but as with any speaker brand, there are family resemblances between models.

I like the character of the Fanes. I just haven't had any come in my cabs and I'm past the point of doing the necessary to install a set.

Edit: I think a set would sound great to replace the V30s in my closed back deep PRS cab, and would compliment the HXDA nicely. The V30s accentuate the top end a little more than I'd like.

The V30s in the Tone-Master cabs sound somewhat better than the regular ones I've used over the decades: they've got just a little bit less top-end sizzle going on. Maybe it's the cabs, though I somehow doubt it 🤷‍♂️

I still prefer the Black Shadows :)

My favorite amps are unfortunately not made anymore. David Allen made modified Fender style amps under the Allen amps name.

I love his Sweet Spot(beefed-up 18watt, 12” Princeton Reverb)

Accomplice Jr(Deluxe reverb with extras)

Chihuahua(Single ended 6/10watt, with reverb).

I know he sold the company, but I’m not sure how the new amps are. Haven’t heard from anyone who’s bought a new one recently.
I always wanted one of those. Came close a couple times to pulling the trigger on a Chihuahua.

Yes, I didn't mean you couldn't pair them with others, or couldn't find a combo that worked great with others. They meant more like, if you want to get the real Fane vibe in a 2x12 or 4x12, mix two models of Fane, vs. one Fane and one something else.

Mesa is trying to seduce me into getting the new Mark iic+. I play the Mark II channel in the Mark V quite a bit - I like it teetering over the ragged edge.

I leave my favourite Two Rock at home, and take my IIC+ with me when I'm going to be playing alongside other folk who use D-types.

I'm generous like that, these days. I used to take the Coli IIB..........

I Think You Would Really Get Along With The Fanes. Adding A Fryette 2x12 To Your Music Room Would Be A Nice Thing IMO. Hook Your Delivery Driver Up With A Drink And A Snack And He Would Likely Carry It Downstairs For You To Save Your Back And Another Ride To The Bad Place.

If I did it I'd replace one of my other cabs. Fat Bottom or Deliverance?
Deliverance Is How I Lean For What You Do. The Deliverance Is Rear Loaded And The Fat Bottom Is Front Loaded. Since You Are (Hypothetically) Replacing A Cab My Concern Is The Front May Be Too Different Although If It Works it Works. If You Were Adding A Cab To What You Already Have A Front Loaded Cab Could Be A Nice Addition. I Have Both In 4x12's And I Love Both. My Standard Answer Is Get Both But One Old Dog Isn't Fooling Another Old Dog...LOL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one; I found the eq on my now gone and dusted JVM410H dead useless. This thing just couldn't react to any equalisation.

Yet I liked a bit of British mayhem from this amp.

Yes, and while no comparison overall, my "Class 5" was the same way. And, most JCM800 type or forward M type circuits are that way because of where the tone stack is on the design.

Kinda makes me love Boogies even more. One move of the EQ, and you are on a different planet. The main reason why I still rediscover my Fillmore after 5 years.

True of my two Mark Vs for sure, but I thought the Fillmore was a very different circuit compared to the Mark series.
It is, Howie. Yet if properly approached, it can take you anywhere. I'm one of these undecided guys who played stratocaster half their life, and ERGs the other half. I feel equally comfortable playing nice and softly, as much as to fucking slay. Ok, Fillmore won't take djent or crushing bone growl, but it's fast enough in its classic rock world to rock hard and tight under a lot of drive; which by itself, it's capable to to generate. Boosted or not.

In short; as the only amp for a while, it served me well
