What Are Your Favorite Amps To Play?

That's just me but I have a lifetime of experience and I'm not going to carry more than I need to anymore! Not trying to get anyone to go this way, just wanted to offer a different perspective.
The longer I play, for some strange reason, dragging heavy stuff around gets worse every year.

On the other hand, at this point, everything I do gets more difficult every year!

Played gigs of one kind or another since '67, but I'm an 'edge of breakup' player and find modeling amps too much of a compromise.

I'm sure 99% of the audience wouldn't know or care.

But I would, and heck, I chase tone to make myself happy. No one seems to complain on the client side and they seem to like my tone enough to keep hiring me. Fortunately, I do my sessions mostly from my home studio now, so at least that schlepping gear thing is only a tiny factor.

Still, if I resumed playing out regularly, I'd probably use a Kemper or similar to save what's left of my back.

Today was All Four Amps Playing Through Several Cabs Day.

The KHE switcher makes doing silly & pointless things way too easy!

It was also Play Through All Pedals Day. I even used the compressor, which I rarely do, but the guitar I call The Temporary Telecaster seems to benefit from it.

"You might keep that one, you never know."

"I haven't even kept all my PS models as I thought I would. All gear is temporary. As The Pretenders' song goes:

Thought that time was on your side,
Not, it's time the avenger.
Nobody is permanent,
Everything's on loan here."

"You've kept a couple of your amps for over a decade."

"I've also kept a couple pairs of socks for over a decade, and I'm not all that into socks, so the time thing is hardly a factor."

"You need to change your socks more often."

"Hey, I change my socks and my underwear at least once a month, like everyone else."

Now that I picked up a Horsemeat & Mary Cries, I'm actually finally bonding with the HDRX 20. It just seemed so harsh with other OD pedals, and to get the natural OD sounding good it had to be loud. So with these two in front, I can get what I like without a whole lot of volume.

Glad I didn't sell/trade it!

Today I had a break in the action and not much to do.

I started eyeballing the amps again, thinking I'd reach Valhalla if only move stuff just a few inches here or there. So I sat and stared all the stuff down with my beady eyes.

Then I thought, "This studio is crap. It doesn't matter what I put where, it's like putting lipstick on a pig. Instead of moving stuff around, just get the place painted, new flooring, new ceiling, etc."

After that I thought, "Well, that's true, but that involves moving a lot of stuff around, too."

Next thing I knew, all this over-thinking overloaded my obsolete brain-processor, and I had to shut down and restart. Freaking thing wouldn't boot up, and my thoughts just sat there in an endless loop. My wife finally came downstairs and reset my P-RAM by slapping me upside the head.

I'm fine now, but my head hurts too much from the P-RAM reset to do much of anything.

"You can't reach Valhalla by moving amps around. But you can reach vanilla."

"I dunno man, once you've had a Krispy-Kreme for lunch it's hard to think about ice cream flavors."

Today the new SovTek 5881 set arrived to replace the stock TunSol in my 2 Channel Custom 20. Sent request off to PTC to see if they can get me a manual or at least details on what I need to bias these at. They read 26.0 on left and 28.4 on right for 27.25 avg, just don't know exactly where they need to be. If anyone has that info, please chime in, otherwise I should hear back from PRS on Monday.

Since they seamed close to what I expect the bias to be, I played a bit. The stock started emitting a nasty hum after warming up and I couldn't find a pair of TungSols. There's definitely a slight change in tone, I think I really like it a bit better. Just got to dial in bias and amp #2 is rocking again.

Quick update, in case anyone else needs the info. The recommended bias is 30 (I kind of expected due to HDRX stating the same on label). Tweaked mine to average of 29.9, which is close enough and enjoying the new tone.

Plate current alone says as much about the bias of an amplifier as the resistance alone about the tonal character of pickups.

I had to look that one up. Looks pretty cool.
A Great Amp IMO...Loud...But Does What It Does Really Well. It Can Do A Lot Of Sounds. It Isn't A Super Clean Amp And It Isn't A Super Heavy Amp...Not Massively Compressed And Over Saturated. It Gives You Back What You Give It Which Is Nice. It Is Always Clear And Articulate...Very Full Sounding And Crisp Which I Like. It Is Punchy And All of The Controls Are Very Responsive And Cover A Great Range Sonically. A Simple Amp In Essence But Tweaking The Controls Can Take You Many Places. It Is Hard To Make It Sound Bad. It Has A HiWatt Type Flavor To It In Some Ways But Of course Can Get Far More Gain Than Your Traditional HiWatt. It Is An Incredibly Loud Amp Though And Of Course Does Best When You Can Open It Up And Play It. I Wish They Were Still Being Made As I Really Enjoy The Ones I Have.
