If you noticed my NGD thread, you have seen that I snagged a 2014 S2 Custom 22 yesterday. Looked good from the parking lot inspection, but had noticeably more neck relief than I like, old strings, etc. Pickups sounded unbalanced, the neck pickup was considerably louder than the bridge pickup. The trem was still floating. Only had 10 minutes to play yesterday, so I knew the potential was there, but I also knew she needed some time.

Finally got some free time this afternoon. Decked the trem, cleaned the scratchy volume pot, couple drops of mineral oil on the dry fretboard, tweak the truss rod, tweak intonation, new strings, adjust pickup height....

She's a whole new guitar. Pickups are still on the hotter side of what I was thinking, but they sound great, so they're sticking around for at least a bit - as is the guitar. Once I've decided I'm going to keep her, she shall most likely be named Bobbi.

When I was considering which guitar to order, I emailed Dave's Guitars and asked how much new strings and a setup would add to the cost of the guitar because I knew it would be needed. I was told that they do that automatically for all the instruments they sell. That was a "ok buy from them" moment right there because I should only need to tune up when it gets here.

I've been looking at Dave's site all day off and on. So much eye candy!

Dave's is awesome :). I've only bought from them once so far, but will definitely do so again in the future.

At some point, I do recommend learning the basics of truss rod adjustment, intonation, and action height. You may end up preferring a setup slightly different than most players...or you may not. For instance, in my case, I like the least amount of neck relief that I can get away with, less than most other players I know. As such, it's really nice to be able to at least do the quick tweaks yourself. If you really want to study it, I highly recommend Dan Erlewine's book "How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great".

I have done so in the past on my Epiphone Casino Coupe. I figured that since it was in a nice shop before sending it would be good to have them set it up.

I relocated to a different climate not too long ago.
It took a while for the guitars to "shift" and I am in the process of
doing setups on all of them now. What a huge difference a setup makes.
