So I was practicing the other day and had a song that required some open-string 5th fret natural harmonics. On the neck pickup on my Vela, I got that distinctive "plonk" that happens when the pickup is directly under the harmonic node at the 24th (and 5th) fret, just like on a Telecaster.
Since the first-generation Type D pickup is asymmetrical, I was wondering if anyone has had any success in flipping the pickup around so the magnet poles are closer to the bridge than to the neck. (I suspect this is also why they revised the Type D to have centred pole pieces before they replaced it with the Narrowfield in the neck of the Vela.)
I may pull my pickguard and rotate my pickup this weekend, so I'll let you know how it goes.
