US Core Strap Buttons

The strap buttons are the one thing that I feel PRS gets so very wrong. I hates them. Since I always play with a strap, even when sitting, the first thing that happens when a new PRS enters my house is the replacement of the stock buttons with Schaller strap lock buttons.

I always store guitars in the case, and I always use a strap. All my non-acoustic guitars get strap locks. I don’t understand the use of the bass string tree since most straps are too thick to fit under it. I tried using it, didn’t make sense cutting the slot in the strap wider to fit over it, or having to take the screw out which would make it non-removable. I agree, it is the only thing I think Paul got wrong.

My 2021 from a couple of months ago has the traditional PRS buttons.

I love the PRS stock strap buttons, and dislike using strap locks. And I use thick straps.

I order the Super Soft models from Heistercamp, who have made the button holes to custom length in the past for me, but now offer a PRS length as a standard option. Their pull-up leather models are thicker than the strap button spacing, but they're the thickest leather straps I've ever seen.

A felt washer of the type other builders use would probably extend the button just enough to use the thicker ones.

The PRS straps are also nice, and Richter will make the button hole long enough to do it when you place an order.

But for those who feel differently, I can't imagine a simpler, more painless swap than unscrewing the buttons and putting on a strap lock. No big deal, right?

I’m very careful when I mount the strap lock buttons to make sure the screw length, diameter and thread pitch matches the screw that came out of the factory button.

I feel it is necessary to remove a leather strap when putting the guitar away as the tanning chemicals can affect the finish on a guitar. The State of Connecticut won’t allow leather gloves to be discarded into regular trash anymore because the tanning chemicals are a health hazard. As a result, the company I work for has banished leather glove purchases. This doesn’t impact my use of leather straps, shoes, belts, gloves etc, but it does make me limit how long my strap is attached to the guitar to times I am playing. Food for thought.

I just saw a player last night playing at an open mic, and his strap came off his guitar 3 times in two songs. I have never had this happen with a PRS strap button, then again, I am not really moving much but this guy wasn't moving much either!! I will say, there has to be a better way!!! I love the standard buttons for their secure connection, I do NOT like the time it takes to get my strap-ons!!!!

I seem to have completely lost my ability to post pictures on here - if I could, I would. Guy on the Facebook PRS GOW page posted these weirdo looking buttons and says that's what is being used now.
