What are the pick ups used to upgrade an older 245 se standard? I don't want to break the bank, but want something better than stock. SD has humbuckers called 59 Vintage Blues, but they are a little pricey.

There's not much better deals out there for a good set of US pickups than SD. Personally for a 245 I'd contact Wolfe at Wolfetone and get a Drv in the neck and Marshallhead in the bridge but that'll be a little more than SD. For PRS pickups I'd go 5708, but that's even more money. If new is out of budget plenty of good deals used. Especially SD since so mainstream.

That's what I did for my SE 245 with A4 magnets. Also like @SinSir said, it's hard to beat SD on price.

I'll assume that you've already tried changing pickup & pole piece heights which can make a big difference. One option before switching pups is to swap the magnets in the current pickups (which I believe are A5's) and go with an A4 in the bridge and A2 or A4 in the neck, especially if you feel that the A5s are harsh.

to me it would be the SD 59's
or SD Pearly Gates
SD Seth Lovers are worth looking at too

For my purposes, I would go with either SD Pearly Gates or SD Hades Gates. My favorite PRS pickup is the 57/08. That would be my first recommendation but they don't come cheap. I would also look at the 59/09 if the PRS prices would work for you.

Sometimes, if you know what you're looking for, you can pick up deals on used pickups. Various outlets.

The SD '59 that went into the neck of my S2 594 was used. I only saved about $20, but it's $20.
