I just got my first PRS - SE Custom 24 Floyd Rose. Came to me 1/2 step tuned down standard E. Ive tried to tune the guitar to a standard e - First by using the dials at on the Floyd Rose - after that wouldnt work for more then a few strums I unlocked the strings at the top of the neck and turned it to a standad E like you normally would. Now it still wont stay in tune. Seems like Im doing something wrong. Im sure I can continue to read online about this but wondering if anyone has had the same issues with a new PRS and that there is something specific I need to know or do. Been playing for a long time but never owned a floyd so I could use help.

Just so we’re clear, I’m no Floyd expert (Pink, Rose, or The Barber), so take this for what it’s worth...

I’d unlock the strings at the nut, center the fine-tuners at the bridge, and stretch the strings thoroughly. Tune it, then stretch again, then tune it again. Maybe one more stretch, retune, lock at the nut. That really should take care of it. As I said, I’m not a Floyd expert, and I’ve only got two Floyds, and I haven’t really had any issues. Probably the worst was taking my EVH from 9s to 10s and having to adjust the claw and the D-Tuna. That took a bit of work.

Give it a shot, and let us know what happens.

Atlantig's advice is good. Floyd's need to have the strings fully stretched before they will stay in tune properly. Also, as you've changed the tension on all the strings you'll need to adjust the trem claw so that the floyd is parallel with the body again when it is in tune. Floyds are very sensitive so changing the tension on one string will make all the other strings change as the system finds its balance. You need to incrementally get there by tuning all the strings when unclamped, then re-doing all the strings, gradually getting closer and closer until everything is in balance and in tune, then clamp up and fine tune if needed with the fine tuners.

You need to adjust the claw springs as well as make sure strings are stretched well. It's a bit of a dance with the floyd if you aren't used to it, little changes have decent sized impacts.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I had started to panic that maybe there was something wrong with the guitar but I will follow the steps and report back Thanks again!

Just wanted to follow up on this post from 2019. While i love my PRS and Floyd Rose on so many levels it has become clear to me over the last few months that the Floyd Rose just doesn't work for me and all the alternate tunings Im consumed with i.e. Alter Bridge etcc. Seems obvious that I should never had chosen a Floyd Rose but live and learn! So I am looking to trade it in for a Mark Tremonti model, or even a Mark Halcomb etc.. Not sure if trading discussions are allowed on the forum but let me know if your interested

all comments are excellent! stretch your strings well, center the adjustment at the level of the tuned tremolo, lock your neck and finish the adjustment on the tremolo.
and most important ... make sure your Floyd is parallel to the body otherwise the knives will not work well!
