Anybody have some advice for dealing with the springs on the PRS pickup rings? I swear they’re made out of the same adamantium as Wolverine’s claws. Phillip McKnight has a great suggestion in the video linked below. I was able to get one of them installed using his advice but my fingers are completely shredded right now and there’s no way I’m getting the other one on today.

Is There A Hands Free Self Soldering Hack For Changing Pickups Out And Correctly HavingThem Wired In Any Way You Can Imagine? :)

I’m not changing the pickups, just swapping the stock plastic rings for some made out of flamed maple. Seriously, the springs on these things could replace the struts on a pickup truck.

But to answer you question, yes, there are several options. Seymour Duncan has the Hyperswitch that you can program from your phone over Bluetooth for any number or wiring options. SD and Mojotone also both have solderless wiring kits.

I Know, I Was Just Being Funny Because I Absolutely Hate Wiring Pickups So If A Video Could Do It For Me I Could Finally Get These Last Dozen Or So Sets Installed. :)

Haha, yeah I just saw the joke in it. You’ll have to forgive me. I’ve been drinking for a while to numb the pain of my poor damaged fingers.

I love working up new circuits. It’s just these b@stard springs that are killing me. I have plans to eventually rewire this to 24 08 spec. It’s a CU24.

ROFL I just struggled myself with this yesterday morning, swapping the cream colored rings to black on my Custom 24P. I got the first screw in place using the alligator clip method (push the spring down all the way and clip the screw, then line it up with hole). The other 3 I just used the brute force method (push down on the pickup ring to get the screw in contact with bracket, then keep turning until it falls into place). I have one small blister on left hand index finger and I even smaller one on that thumb. So I have to play a bit gingerly until that heals up, but I got the #$$#ing things swapped.

I wish they could make the most trivial change to the pickup bracket design - make a raised edge around the screw hole the diameter of the spring, so it will hold in place while pushing the screw down.

Here’s the first one installed for comparison. I’m very anti plastic. I already have the tips on two trem bars replaced with some made out of maple and ebony. Even the switch tip is made out of maple. Probably swap that for ebony, too.

Or maybe they could just use some springs that weren’t forged in the fires of mount doom along side the one ring :)

The part I found funny was the springs on the stock 85/15S pickups in my SE CE 24 Satin were half the length of both the ones that came with the \M/ pickups I put in it, and the core 85/15 in the P24. I don't remember struggling with them when I swapped the \M/'s in and that was much more work overall.
