I seriously considered a new veneer, but I don't have the gear to vacuum apply it properly.

Yeh you're right sorry, I knew that just got my wires crossed. Mahogany body, maple cap, maple veneer.

So I decided to stain it, fade it from really dark on one side the cap, by the knobs, to a lighter colour on the other side; fade it bottom to top when the guitar is held in the playing position if that makes sense.

I also decided to deliberately break the common rules of staining, to not start with black and rub it back to make the grain pop before adding other colours. What's the worst that could happen.........

Blue first.......

Sanded back......

More blue to start the burst........

Lot's of sanding and adding stain.......

Sanded back then black stain, several times......

Exaggerating the burst...........

More sanding.........

That's cool! Mine is nothing like it looked in my head when I started, but I love experimenting and seeing where it goes.
