There’s some very nice veneers out there for not a lot of pennies and probably cheaper than several layers of paint.

Just saying “for a friend” :D

I seriously considered a new veneer, but I don't have the gear to vacuum apply it properly.

Love where this is going. I bet it turns out sweet.

Erm.......

The vacuum clothes bags work well and don’t break the bank

Ah do they? I looked at those but wasn't sure they'd get enough of a vacuum. I've got a Wolfgang project on the go i'll try it on, thanks mate.

I

For the record, the top is maple, not mahogany.

Yeh you're right sorry, I knew that just got my wires crossed. Mahogany body, maple cap, maple veneer.

So I decided to stain it, fade it from really dark on one side the cap, by the knobs, to a lighter colour on the other side; fade it bottom to top when the guitar is held in the playing position if that makes sense.

I also decided to deliberately break the common rules of staining, to not start with black and rub it back to make the grain pop before adding other colours. What's the worst that could happen.........
