Time for a new PRS: violet inspiration

Outstanding finishing! One of my favourite in the private stock options with laguna dragon’s breath ( not violet but still awesome).
But I think a PS with this finish would be really expensive.....

It wasn’t cheap, let’s put it that way...

There's a few pics over here:

And my purple cu22 to get you started:

Off the charts.

A lot of interesting replies: thanks to everyone!

Maybe the first question you should answer is how important having 24 frets is to you. You can't have both (1) 24 frets and (2) the traditional placement of the neck pickup, which produces a warmer, more traditional tone. A lot of really great players, like Gunthrie Govan, can't seem to live without 24 frets. A lot of other players can't live with what moving the neck pickup does to its sound. I, for example, don't like Gibson SGs or PRS CU24s because the neck pickup doesn't sound right to me. I'd prefer better upper fret access, but not at the expense of changing how the neck pickup sounds. There's no right or wrong, however; you have to decide what works for you.

I normally associate "smooth" with midrange, and maple and ebony tend to accentuate high frequencies, not midrange. The 58/15s also eliminate some of the 57/08s' lower midrange and have more high end clarity than the 57/08s. So, for me, that's not a recipe for "smooth." But, if you play with a lot of gain, you may nonetheless be able to get a smooth tone and the maple and ebony should help add clarity and definition to the notes, particularly on fast runs .

There's no right or wrong; you just have to figure out what's right for you. Choosing specs always seems like a compromise, at least to me, but if you think about what's most important to you and spec the guitar accordingly, I think you'll be happy with what you end up with.

24 frets is not a reason of life. I mean, of course I love having 2 more frets, as I don’t love the neck pickups position so much: it sounds good, but could sound better, and that’s why i’m Into a 22 frets model, for a new kind of sound. Not better or worst, of course, just different. About woods selection...maple and ebony is a configuration I still don’t have in my guitar garage ( I have a maple neck and fingerboard, a couple with maple neck and rosewood fingerboard, and of course mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard on the cu24 ), so could complete my sound options, but as long I like to play solos with a good amount of gain, expecially on the prs, ( and here maple/ebony should give a nice clear attack to the sound ), I also like a bit of midrange: 58/15 and quilted maple help a bit, but maybe a different body wood could be useful? Maybe swamp ash?

Here's another option - Buy 2 core guitars : )
  1. Custom 22, with 58/15 pickups. You now have trem and 22 frets
  2. 594, with 58/15LT pickups but no trem. You now have 22 frets, the LT pickups you are after, and a fixed bridge. (I vote Singlecut, did somebody say Gibson-style?)
$$ wise, I don't know how this differs from your Private Stock option, but you'll end up with 2 new awesome guitars that cover so much territory you'll be spoilt for choice.
Maybe even cheaper overall than the PS?
You might even find a Wood Library 594 with a maple neck, that will also give more variety again.

I'm no mathematician, but basically... CU24 + CU22 + 594 = Happiness.

I hate maths, but that addition seems to be difficult to correct :D
Seriously: not asked for a Private Stock quote, but I think will be really expensive, so at this moment not a realistic option, and even if a long waiting time could help with this, I think that a wood library/artist package is something more realistic of course. As long as I would like to buy every single model with a prs logo on it, I have to say that a Gibson-style sound is not so usefull in my style and music I usually play. That is why a Gibson itself or a similar McCarty is not in my priority, but I definitely think I will buy one of this 2 models one day!

Swamp Ash generally is thought to have a very scooped tone, meaning that it won't have much mid range. I would think that a guitar with a swamp ash body, maple neck and ebony fingerboard more-likely-than-not would be very bright, possibly even harsh sounding. If you're interested in knowing more about tone woods, here are some reputable resources:

Good luck with the purchase!

Thank you! Yeah, seems that mahogany remains the best choice for the body! Maybe I should think about rosewood board, or ebony board on a mahogany neck...

Just a little update: I get a quote from my dealer for the guitar I have in mind, but surprisingly seems that this one should go as a Private Stock, for around 12k euros!!!!

But I found lot of similar instrument as wood library/artist package....

Specs are

-quilted maple top
- mahogany body
- flame maple neck (color match )
- ebony board
- green abalone inlays ( like artist package )
- hybrid hardware
- 58/15 pickups

Not so far from something like this one

If you're very picky about the appearance, Violet is not a good color to order sight unseen. I don't think any of the guitars pictured so far are faded. It's just the nature of the double stain. It starts bright red, which is sanded back to look pink and then blue stain is applied. Depending on how the particular piece of wood accepts stain, there will be spots where the red drops out, leaving those areas looking blue or even gray in some lights. It's a unique feature of the staining method.

Here's mine while it was at the dealer, before ever seeing the light of day. There are some lighter areas, particularly going up to the switch, simply due to the amount of negative space between the curls. Every once in a while, I get the idea in my head that it's fading, but then I go back and look at the first pics of the guitar and realize it still looks the same.

I thought Wood Library guitars are ordered by 'dealers' and need a certain amount of instruments in a batch. Its possible that your preferred specs will match a WL spec but if you can't get hold of one of those and your dealer isn't prepared to order a batch of guitars, the only option is a 'one-off' custom order - a Private Stock.

https://www.prsguitars.com/blog/post/the_wood_library_what_is_it - What is Wood Library?

As for Artist Package - I don't know if they are still running that or how you would even go about getting one.

I think you are right! In this case, if they already ordered a wood library stock i think I will have to take a look at that guitars...

Hi there!
Huge updates here
My research was going on, and the results of a special order was a long waiting time ( more than 10 months ), and not cheap, even if of course less than 13/15k dollars Private Stock

My original idea of a custom 22 turned into something different, as long as 58/15 lt pickups with coil split was not available in a special order. So I get into 594 or DGT idea. And this was the right choice: I found a big deal on a Prs store in UK. The color is not violet, but all other specs were as i intended and the price was amazing, so.....I bought it!

Is obviously a Wood library limited edition in River blue 10 top, maple matching neck with ebony fretboards and mother of pearl inlays ( no pics can give them justice: they are AMAZING ).
I also added a black paisley case instead of the standard one paying a little extra.
The cost was 4K dollars, similar guitars in Europe are around 5,5k!

It’s just arrived and I had few minutes test: seems to have lots of different tones and feels quite different from my 24, and this is what I wanted. Even the DGT neck is vintage style, but feels comfortable. Still not sure if I want the keep the 0.11, maybe 0.10 would feel better.
It’s a bit thicker than the 24 ( and also heavier, but not so much ), and seems to have a better sustain.

Tomorrow morning will go with better pics and deeper impressions!

Thank you so much to everyone!

I love that color, too, even if having already a Cu24 in faded whale blue, maybe I would have preferred a different color! But I love river blue and particularly on this ten top!

Tomorrow I will upload some detailed pics.

About the guitar itself:
I tried 7-8 Prs guitars, mostly cu 22 or 24 and an se24. Everyone felt great.
First time with a DGT, I really love it: it’s something like the perfect cross point between a vintage guitar and a modern one. The neck’s shape is vintage style even if not too much and feels comfortable after few minutes of playing ( maybe I prefer the pattern regular of the cu24, but I still need some experience to tell ). Is a little bit thicker than the 24 so it s a little bit heavier ( maybe the maple neck helps to decrease that difference ), but to be honest the weight is not a problem at all, and the thicker body gives a wormer and deeper sound that you can appreciate mostly in humbucker mode, with a guitar that sound similar in some way to a Gibson, but with a playability that is a lot better ( personal opinion of course, never enjoyed the feeling of Gibson guitars ). In this guitar is perfect for classic rock and blues, and volume pots can bring you from a dirt and crunch to a clean and bright sound without loosing anything of your dynamic. The big surprise was how it sounds in a jazz/smooth jazz mood. Not properly a semi-acoustic, but has a lot of harmonics and a very warm sound. In single coil mode the nature of the guitar changes in a drastical way, and become in some ways similar to a strato or a tele with the right tweaking on your amp.

As I promised ( but with a little bit in late ), more detailed pics.

The beautiness of the black paisley case.

Finally I got a shot that represent mother of pearl inlays properly. Love them!

Also love the feeling of the ebony fretboard: first time having it on an electrical guitar. Feels so smooth and increase the playability in my opinion.
