I thought this was pretty cool...since, you know I'm a huge fan of the McCarty Singlecut, and I love mine. Of course, I'm not fit to carry Tim Pierce's gig bag, but still...I like this show, and these guys are awesome to watch.

Justin Derrico is the reason I picked up a Bogner Shiva and Shiva 20th...and a Les Paul.

One of my favorite players.

And...queued up to watch during cardio tonight! Justin and I will be making a lot of the same faces.

:p

Oh yeah, Derrico is the kind of great player who's an inspiration. And I love that he said he still takes lessons on the instrument - at his level, that is some serious dedication.

Plus a regular TV gig along with touring is some serious responsibility. He said he had to learn over 200 songs for the TV gig. That's a HECK of a lot of work!

I really admire all three of those guys for their dedication to the instrument, and their strong musicianship.

Oh no.... I only listened briefly but the Les Paul sounded the best. Hopefully it was the player... or the fact I only had a brief listen. Will have to do so again later tonight!

Great video, thanks for sharing! I liked the sound of the singlecut a lot (and I definitely liked his playing the best), but I think sound-wise the 335 edged out the other two (I know, heresy)!

Well, the point of my posting this is that a world-class session guy like Tim Pierce, who's played on thousands of major label sessions, likes the McCarty Singlecut enough to have spent his own dough on one (he says he prefers to do that).

It's interesting to me that a post like this becomes a tone contest, which of course, it can't be, since the players are different guys, not one guy playing different guitars. Derrico is going to sound like himself, so are the other two guys.

And as always, player, guitar, amp. It's a system. Tim Pierce was playing whatever amp was on hand where they were, he wasn't at his own studio with his own amps, pedalboard, etc. If you've watched a lot of his videos, his own usual rig and choice of amps is different.

I suspect that video was at Derrico's place, because it hasn't been in either Tim or Pete's earlier videos, and Pierce didn't have his usual pedalboard or amps with him.

But tone isn't a contest - you're allowed to like whatever moves you! ;)

Thorn was playing his '63 335 through his own signature amp, with his own pedalboard. Great player, great tone, good guy, using his own gear. As I said, I didn't see any of Tim Pierce's amps in that video. He normally uses different ones.

I have the feeling he just brought his own guitar and plugged in.

Oh of course, there is no denying that they are going to sound greatly different based on all of that. I was just going purely on what sounded best to my ears in the video. I have NO DOUBT that the PS SC is a nicer guitar (I have never played a 335 that I liked)!

I dunno, I think that PS singlecut stole the show in the intro jam, for me. It sounded more organic, clear, and defined than the LP, but that probably has a lot to do with how much gain the LP was pushing vs. Tim's PS.

I would really like to get my hands on either a new SC245, or one of the PS McCarty Singlecuts, and check them out. I never had much interest in singlecut guitars, then suddenly got an itch to buy one. Tried several SE's, Gibsons, Epi's, and honestly didn't like most until I found my SE Akesson, which quickly became one of my favorite guitars - probably my #1 if I had to choose. A good singlecut is just a beautiful thing.

Andy, as you know I'm a huge fan of both the SC245 and the McSC, have had both (and of course still have my McSC), as well as the other SC models since 2000 when they first came out, even the SC trem.

So here's the good news: If you like the SC245, you'll like the McSC and vice-versa. Yes, there are differences (and here I'm talking about the 57/08 models, I haven't yet played one of the new ones with the 58/15s that coil tap), but they're not huge differences. They're differences of degree. Just as with my CU24 30th Ann. PS vs a Core CU24 30th, they're both great versions of essentially the same central theme.

The 58/15s are super-nice pickups, also.

So you owe it to yourself to at the very least, try out an SC245. I'd rather have one great guitar like an SC245 than 5 or 6 lesser guitars. But that's just me...

What exactly are you getting at Les? I have exactly 6 "lesser guitars," do I hear you mocking me???

Nah. But if you did, you'd probably be right! I really do need to buckle down and be patient for a while, and get something that just blows me away. As much as I've enjoyed all the guitars I've purchased in the last 2 years, there's a limit to how many I can realistically use. I'm getting dangerously close to just buying things because they're new and shiny - some might even say I'm already there.

I think it's going to come down to a shootout between the SC245 and McCarty. I really dig the 24.5" scale, and the thick, woody vibe of a singlecut. But I also like the body shape and feel of the McCarty style. Decisions are hard.

I love this show.

I loved all of the guitars. I come from playing a Gibson but I love me some PRS.

I actually just got Tim's signature overdrive and I love it.

I actually had no idea how many you have!

But...for a long time instead of having a stable of what I considered compromises in guitars, I limited myself to one or two of what I felt were great PRS Core models. That's just the way my mind works. When all is said and done, even though I make my living with these things, I've found I don't need or want a ton of choices. One or two good ones, I'm set, three is a bonus!

I'm also a guy who'd buy one Armani suit instead of 4 cheap ones.

So yeah, if I were in your shoes, of course I'd sell what you have and buy a great PRS. But I have no idea what you have, and maybe you're already doing that?

Had a listen again - I think it's too difficult to call it. The players are completely different and playing through a different setup. The PRS obviously sounds great. I was likely attracted more to the style of Derrics playing!

I thought Pete sounded the best with the 335 for my taste, I do need to check out more semi hollow thangs.
