Howdy all,

Got a bit of the PRS bug of late...have a chance to buy a "near mint" '94 EG-1M in sunburst cherry with a 3-piece 10-top, price is around a grand with original case etc. I've found it tough to get any info on these earlier models, like where did they rank in the PRS pecking order? Anyone have any goods on these? Price seems pretty good, have not played it yet (let alone seen it in person), but in general terms are these pre-Stevensville units particularly exceptional?

Thanks for helping out a noob. Cheers

Hey buddy, welcome to the forum.

The EG's were PRS's second attempt at a lower cost instrument and the one you're talking about was actually the top of the line along with the end for the EG series. Although I stated that they were "lower cost" that didn't mean it was a lesser quality guitar from the other PRS of that era, they were just different,.. They were like the beginning of PRS's (and to a great degree Joe Knagg's since he designed it and traces of it's DNA can be seen in his "Strat" offerings from his own company) Fender-ish side.

The EG's were PRS's first 22 fret guitars and played an important role in not only PRS development but also Excel (the people who machine the amazing metal parts for PRS) who actually cut out the bodies for the EG guitars, and Lindy Fralin who designed the "Domino" pickups that came on some models of EGs.. Which is kinda cool.

The main problems for the EGs' seem to be that they came out at a time when PRS was fighting for survival as a maker of expensive and opulent guitars, the CU24 had a pretty strong identity and most people wanted a cheaper CU24 rather than an entirely different guitar... enter 1994 and the CEs ended up trying to fill that void, and the EG's were out. Some EG's also suffered from weak neck to body joints that will (or have already) lead to cracks in the body nearest the bolt plate, if buying used check for that and bargain accordingly.

Having said that,... I want one. They are the direct descendants of the DC3, NF3, and Brent Mason, quality guitars fer sure.

Yep. Everything Sergio said.

I need one, since it shares my initials. I should have picked that black one up back in '94.

That's a neat looking axe, for sure...and Sergio nailed the description.. Oh, and welcome!! Let us know when you pull the trigger.

I'm warming back up for this thing, just noticed something... the ad states "EG-1 1994" but the PRS History page states EG-1's ended prod in '91 then were superceded by EG-2's that had 3-piece maple 10-tops as an option. This would make sense for this particular guitar. Will check it out and report back :) Dunno why I'm so obsessed all of a sudden...then again you guys probably do....

Cheers

At the end of the day I just can`t get jazzed up for this EG... too Stratty and too Cherry (not that that's a bad thing, just not my thing). You'll be delighted to know that I do however have my eye on an '05 CU24, here http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-...S-Custom-24-Mint-Condition-W0QQAdIdZ550308922

The justification for this purchase is I am divesting of a 20-year old business "module" that has served me well but has run its course (yes, I need psycho help!). No point buying something you're only marginally in to...

Right?!
