Thinking of going from rectoverb 25 to Archon 25.

Yeah, and most of us would be tickled to death with a NEW Archon that was built a year ago! That really doesn't matter at all. IMHO, you got a great deal on a great amp.

In fact, I was in the local Mesa dealer last week, and they have 3 new Electrodynes in stock. Want to guess what the birth date is on those? :)

PRS uses either Baltic Birch ply just like Mesa, or solid pine (a premium thing as well) on their heads and cabs. Moreover, they use finger jointed construction on all their heads and cabs, which is the strongest available, and offered by Mesa only on their extra-cost, solid hardwood cabs.

I don't believe they use MDF. You can probably check with PRS customer service and find out exactly what's used on yours.

I hope you're correct. I saw a guy bitching about it in a review somewhere online. When I got the amp, the tolex (or whatever you call the black covering) didn't look as nice as my Mesa so I figured the difference was the wood (MDF). I would feel great about Birch or Pine :)

I never opened my Archon 25 combo while I had it (upgraded to 50w head), but my HXDA combo is pine.

Gee, and you read it on the internet! So it must be true, right? ;)

A few years ago they had a line of SE amps made overseas to a lower price point; these have been discontinued for quite some time.

Those may have had the MDF construction that you read about in an online review?

However, the USA PRS amps have all been either baltic birch or solid pine - every one I've seen, anyway.

In comparable thicknesses, MDF is heavier than birch ply, and much heavier than pine, by the way.

Hah! My brand new archon that I picked up in early 2016 was built in December of 2014....it's almost like PRS sits on them before shipping
