Thinking about ponying up for a Private Stock DGT. What do you guys think?

Hey all. Got the guitar bug big time after I saw this gorgeous Private Stock DGT with a 53/10 in the neck.

Any input/previous owners advice would greatly be appreciated.

I have done two PS DGT's of sorts. Two of the best sounding builds I have done. The both have double DGT p-ups.

I have had a few Willcutt Wood Library DGTs and they have the DGT Bridge with a 59/09 in the Neck.

That's not quite the DGT/5310 combo..... but feel free to ask away!!!

If I were to build a private stock, I think it would be a hybrid of the P22 and a DGT! :D 53/10 neck position sounds killer but I still think I prefer the DGT over it, just IMHO of course! ;)

If Tim says it. It's true. DO IT!

Tim,

What type of builds were those DGT's spec wise? Tonal qualities? THANKS!

Through the builds I have messed with neck wood, fretboard wood, body wood, body shape and scale length…. But not the pick-ups or DGT electronics (I think the wiring and caps etc are specific to the DGT Pups…. But can’t say for sure). If you keep the P-ups and elecs, I would be pretty confident you will keep pretty close to the DGT voice. The meat and potatoes will still be there, you are just tweaking the recipe to be a bit sweeter/saltier if you will!!
For me changing the P-ups like on the WWL DGTs with the 59/09 changes the flavour more so. Not bad or good… just more of a change.
It may depend on how you approach the build in your mind and the rest of your arsenal!! If you are a Single-coil guy and are looking for a great humbucker type guitar, then I could definitely see shy a PAFish type bucker in the neck would appeal.
But if you already had a number of Singlecut H-H type guitars and were looking for a bit of a different vibe then maybe I would stick with the DGT neck. If I were looking for a guitar to gig in a covers band then the double DGT;s work really well.
Like I said I am pretty sure there is something going on in the Elecs of the DGT as well as the p-ups. I think it would be easier to start out your build as a DGT and then un-DGT it, than to start with the PAFfy and try to DGTify it later….. if that makes sense??

I had my DGT ordered with a 57/08 in the neck - works really well with the DGT in the bridge and a little clearer than the DGT neck pup to my ears.

I have a guitar from the Wildwood run. They are FANTASTIC! Really, I don't have any guitar that I'd rate higher for general purpose stuff. And, they're beautiful too. It wasn't clear from the original post if you were looking at one from Wildwood, but they are the only ones I've seen that have the 53/10s in the neck position.

The link that Wooleymonster posted has clips as Les pointed out, so you get a feel for the overall tone from that (along with Grissom's commentary). If it is one from this run that you're looking at, they don't have the trem of course, but that was a "feature" so far as I was concerned...

Had my PS DGT for 3 years now, and it is rapidly turning into a go-to favourite for versatility, feel and response. I stuck with the DGT electronics (I have enough of everything else when the mood takes), and am glad I did - the pups sounds excellent particularly in the OD / lighter distortion range where I spend most of my time at the moment

If you like DGT soup already, a PS will enhance it further - highly recommended
