I don't sell guitars much. When I find one that I like/love/connect with, I tend to keep them. But, I have more guitars than I really use regularly. Not a ridiculous amount and I do enjoy and play them all, just some more sparingly than others. I have guitars that can cover the same territory. I'd like to get some new cabs. I want a PRS 4x12 - just because, not because I need it. I'd like to try one and also would like to have a matching 4x12 for my Archon at home. It's more of a vain, metro-matching type thing while also wanting to hear an all V30 loaded cab with it(my other 4x12s are Bogner Uberkab with V30 & 75s in X pattern). I'd also like an open back 2x12. I might've checked a PRS out, but they don't make an open back. Thought I'd maybe get a Bad Cat to match my hot cat head.

I won't sell anything til after tax time, maybe I can squeeze some out of there, though I do have some other stuff that needs to be covered first. Thoughts, opinions?

Thoughts, opinions?

Depends on what you want to sell, and how much you want to sell it to me for! ;)

I have a couple axes and amps like that... fortunately I didn't spend a ton of money on them, so they're worth more to me than I would ever get from selling them. On the topic of cabs, I will say this - my experience has been that all my amps sound best by far when paired with the matching cab. I think Les had a similar experience with his DG30.

PRS does have a semi-open back, ported cab that is absolutely worth considering instead of an open back: the David Grissom cab. It sounds fantastic, is lightweight (made of pine), and the ports on the back are about the size of the speakers and are even covered with grille cloth. It's a beautiful thing to play through and behold!

I'm all about not having too many guitars that are not really necessary.

My general rule of thumb for selling/trading in guitars is to ask myself this question: "Would I really miss it...??"
Sometimes it's hard to know the answer until some time has passed, but if you're honest with yourself, it's a great gauge.
Of course, if the honest answer is "no", then have at it!

Is the DG "tuned" (for lack of a better word) for the DG head, or is it more versatile than that? I haven't looked much into it because I'm thinking the DG amp is not a good match for me, and just about everything I've heard about the cab is tied to its use w/the amp.

And I'm having similar thoughts, Vaughn - I've got a couple things that aren't getting much play time, so I'm thinking this is the year to move some of them along. I'd love to do a PS build this year, if bonus time treats me well. But I also hate the idea of totally depleting the guitar fund, so I'm thinking a guitar or two may hit the road. And almost certainly one amp that I just can't seem to get where I want it - but that will likely be a local consignment or trade-in (hmmm...Kingfisher?...). It's a weird feeling because I rarely sell anything - I bought it all for a reason, and for almost all my stuff, that reason still holds. I think maybe some of my interests have just shifted a bit.

I recently have made the switch from a 4x12 V30 loaded cab to dual 2x12 V30 PRS DB big mouth cabs. I love the flexability of using one or two cabs and when stacked together with my Archon, and they sound great! It's also easier to move the 2x12 cabs by myself when it wasn't with the 4x12. Had my first gig last night with the dual cab setup, let's just say I'm never going back to a 4x12.

Anyways, sorry for rambling. I'm not sure I can tell as much of a difference between the open back and closed back 2x12 cabs, I just know those DB big mouth cabs rock. \m/

I've got one guitar that I will typically choose of over the one I'd let go. That's really just a preference thing. Both great guitars. So I could live without it. Man, Alan, don't bring up the PS thing...I'm right there with ya. I'd have to definitely let some things go to get there though. Might be a little farther off for me. Again, I'll have to reassess that whole thing too.

I vote no for a few reasons.

First off, guitars are awesome fashion accessories and way more fun to look at than cabinets. There is scientific evidence that audience members of the opposite sex are more inclined to notice your guitar than they would your black speaker box that is by the drummer or worse, yet your bass player, which absolutely no one looks at if you are (and you are) in a rock band. So even if the guitars in question are blue or has a killer clown face on it... Keep 'em!

Having un-matching cabs and heads portrays the illusion that you are so discriminating in your quest for tone that you found the exact cab that sounds "best" and you don't give a damn that it's not by the same manufacturer. You also don't wanna be too "matchy-matchy", a truly chic look comes from within, by pairing some of your favorite looks with each other, you don't wanna wear Gucci shoes, with a Gucci shirt, and some Gucci pants and socks, with a Gucci jacket.. Mix it up, otherwise you'll look like an advertisement for a brand rather than advertising your great personal sense of style. You don't wanna roll around town looking like her:

If you want to hear a cab with all V-30's in it, why not swap the speakers you have in the "X" pattern to two cabs with different speakers in 'em? It'll be free! I'm a huge fan of semi-open back cabinets but unless you're micing the back of it (and flipping the phase while you're at it) during a studio session, it's not worth it as you probably won't be able to notice too much of a difference on stage in a club where the sound guy just slaps a 57 on the cone, and tells you you're too loud anyway and could you turn it down 'cause he's gonna pump you through the monitors.

I would get behind a 2X12 though, 4X12 cabinets are heavy and a PITA to carry around. You might even be able to find a couple of groupies who were attracted to your pile of guitars to each grab an end and help throw it in the back of the sporty car you drove to the gig in 'cause you don't need a van no more.

If you're absolutely hell-bent on getting a new cabinet I'd suggest snagging an old Mesa 4x12 with the semi-open back that litter CL in our area... They're great sounding and cheap.

Sergio, you're the best!
Funny part is though, the cabs I want are solely for use at home or at best, a one off jam or something. So this is all really to get my rocks off in my music room, mostly jacking around by myself:D
I'd still be using my live gear that I use now. So this is really all self indulgent, masterbatory crap. My 4x12's never see home, they're always at the rehearsal space. Do I need a 4x12 at home? Hell no. I have a closed back 2x12 at home that I'd likely trade/sell toward the cause of my ridiculous quest. I would like to have more than 1 cab at home in case anyone comes over so more than 1 person can play at once.

I have a pair of Mesa vertical 2x12's loaded with V30's. I pulled the backs and added a 6 inch "rib" to hold the jacks. My Archon loves the V30's

It's actually a Satanic-Goat-Clown, but I was tryin' to be vague and not make you feel uncomfortable.

You can go blind doing that, but I know you have the good sense to stop as soon as you need glasses. ;)
I'm surprised it took so long for someone to go here....admittedly I was really baiting it, but that's besides the point. :)

I got a cab you might want but it doesn't match =(

Best of luck deciding what to sell!

I can relate. I'm trying to reduce my guitar lust and be happier with what I already have.

An open 2x12 would be a good option, as well as a pair of convertible 1x12 cabs for scalability/versatility.

Keep working at it - it takes about 12-14 years to become a master baiter.
