The Wife Has Cabin Fever - Extended Weekend Coming Up

The wife is currently suffering from cabin fever, but luckily she has a few days off at the end of the month.

I need to quickly come up with something for us to do without blowing too much cash on short notice travel so I can go bonkers at Experience.

Any ideas?

No ploy or setup. With her not being able to drive and activities reduced she's looking for something to do.

She does really like Nine to Five. And I do have family in Nashville. It's also home of our man CR and Nashville style hot chicken.

With my parents living there it's a pretty frequent trip. It's my standby if I don't come up with something else.

Then head north of Nashville and visit Mammoth Cave. Not the most romantic trip on the planet, but you won't be uncomfortable from hot weather. Otherwise, I recommend The Museum of Appalachia. :vroam:OK, maybe not.

Northern Michigan (Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Traverse City) has very nice, summery resorts on Lake Michigan. First class stuff, honestly. Harbor Springs is my favorite, but they're all within a short drive of each other.

I know what you're thinking: Michigan, what's the big deal? Well, Madonna, Kid Rock, lots of notable and successful people have summer homes there. Hemingway had a house near Charlevoix where he spent his summers. It's still there, too, still owned by his family.

Usually sunny, warm days, cool nights this time of year. Usually. You know the weather.

You can probably get very good end-of-season rates.

Vegas is always cheap to get to and stay...whether it stays that way is up to you.

Lake of the Ozarks, but not next weekend....it'll be a zoo.

Bed and Breakfast in Hermann or Rocheport...even in St. Charles, altough that's a bit too close to you.

KC could be an easy drive...stay on the Plaza, eat some BBQ.

Sergio's right about Chicago.

Groupon has some great travel deals. They had one a couple of weeks ago for a romantic getaway at Niagra falls that was really cheap if you could get there.

+1, Les. My wife and I spend a week or two at Crystal Lake every August (and were just there). There are a lot of really cool lakes and towns close to each other in the Traverse City area. We love the charming fishing village, Leland, for example. Sleeping Bear Dunes was recently picked by NBC to be one of the top five travel destinations in the USA.
We'd own a vacation home on Crystal if Michigan didn't rape non-residents with outrageous property taxes (my vent for today ).
This is a great area to sightsee, hike, canoe (Platt River to Lake Michigan!), swim, hunt Petoskey stones (unique fossilized coral), or simply read a book at the lakes. Great suggestion, Les.

I love those places!

I've always felt that the Great Lakes are more like fresh water oceans, and the places you enjoy are among my faves, too. I've canoed the rivers that join Lake Michigan, and Lakes Charlevoix and Walloon are nice, too.

I wish I'd known that you were traveling through the state, I'd have met up somewhere and taken you guys to dinner!

If its not too late...my wife and I just pick random spots away from any Cities, towns, etc...and research B&Bs to get away to...somewhere away from daily shtuff ...usually look into hiking trails and stuff...occassionally the B&B will pack a nice lunch for a small fee and have met a couple musicians along the way...
