The three guitar experiment

I got close years ago when I moved to Australia. I brought with me my HBII, a Strat, and Tele. I bought an acoustic while I was there. I got along just fine like that for two years. The gear I didn't bring all ended up getting sold eventually (along with the HBII and the Tele :rolleyes:).

I like to think this way from time to time to evaluate what I really need and which guitars suit me best.

Today I could narrow it down to the acoustic, two Strats, and I'd have to do some real soul searching to pick between my 594 and SE One. Choosing between the two Strats I have now would be like picking a favorite child, so I hope it doesn't come to it! Hmm, maybe I don't really need an acoustic anyway...

My wife has been telling me I had too many guitars and I told her 5 was a reasonable number…. Thanks to this post I compromised and told her I would go down to 3. Of course it means a new guitar to accomplish the task. I am selling 3 ESP/LTD’s and replacing them with a core Tremonti. Adding the Tremonti to my DC594 and SC594 should get me everything I need. As long as my wife does not look at the credit card statement to see the $ offset of getting the Tremonti, everyone wins.

Well, I am actively slimming down to three. I feel guilty towards my guitars if they don't get enough love. And I prefer 3 great ones over 7 OK ones. So for me a set that brings something unique with each guitar

1. McCarty Korina P90. With low output wolfetone means it goes from bark to sweet

2. Starla Core. Your gretsch, only better, because it says PRS on the headstock

3. CU24. New addition, but love this guitar.

I’d have a hard time but I could do it. It would probably stunt my creativity at home though. I own the guitars and amps I have for different sonic textures and I’m trying to let go of a few things I consider duplicates of tone.
Playing the violin late last night, it struck me that if I had to, I could be happy for quite a while with it. It would be nice to have another Indy-like Experience so the gang could get a sense of how well balanced the electronics on it are.

If I really went to 3, I might keep a hollowbody with piezo over a pure steel string. But I don’t expect to be faced with that extreme for 20 years or so.

Well, first eight days went ok.
We engineers need our science experiments.
When I was a bachelor, my refrigerator was mostly empty, but there were a few science experiments growing in old carry-out containers. I also had a jar of mustard.

I do have the idea that I should sell all but one guitar and one amp, and call it a day.

"By all means get rid of the guitars, but your amp switcher would be rendered useless."

"Good point."

I can't um...
I mean I've tried to maybe...
You see I've waited 30 posts to...
Ah screw it. Three? Naaaaahhhhhh....
My guitars all need new strings. I have enough strings for all of them. I've had the said strings for a very long time, and have done nothing to remedy the situation with the guitars.

Why do I put this task off, you may wonder?

Dr. Freud tells me that I'm suffering from plureslineaphobia, an anxiety disorder frequently called 'fear of multiple strings'.

"Isn't that right, Dr. Freud?"

"Yes. By the way, no one believes in my work any more. I've been dead for 83 years. That's a long time for science. People move on."

"Look, Dr. Freud. You're simply a character in this post, which is really about my guitars. So, you know, I'm going with plureslineaphobia, which of course is a disorder I made up out of whole cloth. OK?"

"Have it your way. You're the one pretending to talk with me. If you're going to procrastinate about changing the strings on your nice guitars, you don't deserve the guitars, anyway."

"What if I were to confront my demons, change the strings on one guitar, and then decide if I have the emotional strength to change the strings on the rest, one at a time?"

"How many years will it take you to do that?"

"Well, I have five guitars, so I'd say...ten years."

"You'll be dead or wearing Depends by then. Sell the damn guitars."

I effectively have 3 go to electrics. Yesterday I had a spare hour in the day and picked up one of the non-essential guitars that theoretically should go. It felt, played and sounded wonderful (at least by my lack of ability and low standard). Screw the theory; It stays. Perhaps more decisively, I have 5 wall hangers. The thought of having two empty hangers or worse rearranging, spackeling and painting pretty much assures that 5 will be the minimum number until I’m in Depends. I believe the Freudian term for my condition is called Lazy. It’s the same in Latin and English.

When one's precious guitars are cased
They're in a kinder, gentler place;
No bumps, no warps, no grease, no dust
Fewer setups, tweaks or rust.

No empty hooks, or stands on floors
There's happiness when you play yours;
When your guitars are cased, you see
You change your strings less frequently.

Guitars, it's clear, aren't made for walls
There's other art made for eyeballs;
That empty hook is tyranny
Compelled to fill it, you aren't free.

And lest you think I can't relate
Think unfilled spaces are so great;
There's empty space that drives me bats
For I suffer with studio racks.

;)

To be on topic I could maybe get down to 3 PRS Guitars...yikes

Les, I read those words and they fit the verse lines on Franklin's Tower so well.

On the walls a must
It’s there begets the lust
To pick it up and play
No matter what you say

In the case is fine
But surely it’s a sign
That while you’re free of dust
You’ll never know the lust.

So all my space I‘ll fill
If only for the thrill
To see what I acquired
Since I’ve been retired.

Should I become so crazy
That I cease to be so lazy
Ill put them in their cases
Where they’ll be no traces.

Of all that I acquired
nor the music I‘ve sired
My strings may beat the rust
But gone will be my lust.

The love for music doth drive me
The sound - not what the eye can see;
The lust lies not in gear I've bought
My joy is in the music wrought.

No wall reminder do I need
To do one more recording deed;
Performing, aye, and when it's good
With proper feel of strings and wood;
I feel alive, and true and free
Then hear my music on TV.

No whisper do I need to hear
To open up my cases dear;
Out from their cases do they come
They work for me until I'm done;
And last before I leave my space
The guitar goeth in its case.

A haiku:

My own guitars will
never hang on walls or stands.
They're here for music.

Well played my musical and literary friend.
