So, back in July Sergio started a thread titled "Somebody Buy Me This." It was for a 1988 CE 24 body that popped up for sale. After watching folks banter about for a couple days on this, and watching the clock counting down on the item, I decided to pull the rug out from everyone and buy it :hello:. Well, a night of bonding with a bottle of tequila may have made the decision a little easier (but not necessarily wiser!). At any rate, I thought a thread on the rebuild project would be appropriate.

The body showed up a week ago. I contacted the PTC to see if they would be willing to do the rebuild, along with a custom neck. I knew their policy on necks, but was hoping if it was something I was sending them, and they were doing it, they would make an exception. I wasn't surprised, nor upset, when they said they couldn't do it. I was actually glad that didn't work out because I've always wanted to do a little project like this, but just never got around to it.

It's pretty beat up. A fair amount of chips, and some nasty belt rash, and pick wear. What you'd expect for a 27 year old body.

So, I needed to start piecing things together. So far, I've got this:

I have pick ups and a 2000 NOS Mann-Made trem on order for it. The pickups are being wound this week, and should be here by the end of next week. The trem is at their plating guy (I ordered a gold one), and should be here in about two weeks according to Roxanne. There's a truss rod cover and gold plated jack somewhere between here and Maryland in the hands of FedEx that should be here this week too. The only challenge is a neck, and I knew that would be tough.

As for progress, I dropped the body off this morning for a paint job. They said 10 days, or 2 weeks. We'll see.

BTW, I posted in General because I don't intend to try and pass this off as a PRS. I mean in body and parts it will be, but it's not original, and I wouldn't want anyone to get the impression that that is my goal.

I have two PRS's and neither are original but they are both brilliant!

Good luck with this rebuild, I look forward to seeing the finished article.

Sweet! Way cooler than my project Peavey, lol... which I should probably think about starting one of these days.

I'm sorry wardog that was rude of me. I'll give you a hint on the color.....blueburst just for the guy that started this....

not really
i am good bro, but I know it won't be blue. I say classic vintage yellow or santana. but if i had input I would go with vintage white and get a rosewood neck made. the gold hardware you have would good with that very nicely

Thanks Tony, it's been fun so far. The wife even commented on it being cool. Good thing she hasn't asked how much money I'm spending. Would have been cheaper to buy a CE24. Not as much fun though!

The more I looked at the original metallic red, the more I thought about having it re-done in the same color. It kind of grew on me over the course of 10 days, or so. I already have a couple of antique white guitars (DGT and an '89 MIJ Strat) so I wasn't going that route. Love the color though. Especially as it ages. As for the paint job, I went for something a little more unique. Hopefully I'll have it at the end of next week and can post some pics.

As for other updates:
- Truss rod cover and input jack arrived from PRS yesterday.
- Pickups shipped from the UK yesterday, and tracking says they're in the hands of the USPS in New York as of 11:36 PM last night.

The neck has been a real challenge though. I've been scouring in the internet for possible luthiers that can make me what I am looking for. But I'm not having a ton of luck. A lot of these guys are a challenge to get a hold of, or don't quickly reply to inquires (or don't reply period). I even reached out to a builder in Australia that has a promising looking website. They say they'll respond in 24 hours, so they've got about 10 hours left! Some of the places are willing to do a neck, but they're only set up for 25.5", or don't do 24 frets, etc.

(justmund, it's ET Guitars. Do you know anything about them? I know Australia's a REALLY big place, but thought maybe....)

I found a place that looked good, but turned out to be in China...no go. I also got a quote from one place on what I wanted....$1670.00 and 9 month wait. No thanks. That's way on the high side.

Just for the record on the neck and what I am wanting to have built: 1 piece, quarter sawn, AAA birdseye maple neck, and fret board. Medium Gold EVO fret wire, custom symbol inlays (ok, I'm a dorky Rush fan, I want the symbols from the Clockwork Angels cover as inlays) in black and a black anhk symbol on the head stock. I'm pretty set on the wood, but the inlays are more of a "wish list" kind of thing. If they put the price over the top, i can do without.

I haven't heard of ET (maybe I should have) but I can tell you it's 8AM on Saturday here in Aus land, so it's more than likely you won't hear from them for another 48+ hours or so. Hopefully they will sooner though of course!

Good luck! I know a local luthier here who might be able to do it, but yeah, he wouldn't be cheap either...

Good luck, sounds awesome!

Monday update: Mailman was just here to drop these off......

You may ask why 3 boxes for only 2 pickups. Well, two boxes are for this project and the 3rd box is a new set for the Bernie. The CE is getting a Holy Diver in the bridge and a Mule in the neck, and the Bernie is getting a matched set of Abraxas. I hope to get to the Bernie sometime this week and will post pics in "Modified Monday."

As for the rest of this project:
- Body is at the paint shop with a tentative ETA of this Friday (8/21)
- Mann Made trem should be here in a week to 10 days
- I was able to locate a suitable neck. It's not everything I wanted, but it was the right price. Compromises! It'll be 4 to 6 weeks before I have the neck.

I've got all of the other pieces/parts just waiting to go.
