The shorter McCarty 594 overall height vs the Les Paul makes the scale length of the neck seem shorter?

Do you like the scale length of the 594?

  • It is fine the way it is

  • I wish it was the same length as the Les Paul at 24.75

  • The double cut length is ok, but the single cut's shorter length I don't care for.

  • I wish the single cut had the same length as the double cut

I originally posted a question about the scale length difference between a Les Paul and the McCarty 594. But after seveal posts I realized the scale length is not the issue, but it's really the overall height of the guitar that i feel the difference with. The 594 is shorter guitar and when I put a strap on either guitar, the 12 fret on the 594 is more to the right than the Les Paul when looking down. This along with the longer Gibson headstock makes the 594 feels like it is a shorter guitar which gave the impression that the scale length of the neck to be shorter.

Pretty good thread here:

It may be because the PRS 594 is a much shorter guitar, and the 12 fret is more to my right than the Les Paul when sitting down and playing it.

All the 594s have the same neck ( scale length ) 24.594.
You might be happier with a OG McCarty with its 25" Scale
I'm more comfortable on longer scale guitars but own and play all the PRS scale lengths except the 594 ( 25.5 , 25 , 25 1/4 , 25.5 )

Perception is a strange thing. I never played a Les Paul before having a DC594 for almost two years. My first impression was that the Les Paul Custom felt (and looked) small compared to the DC594. They are not appreciably different in size, but that is just how I perceived it. With that being said, I do not notice a difference when going between my Les Pauls or my 594's. They feel the same to me. I do notice a difference when going between my DC594's and SC594's because of the strap button location. The DC594 sits lower as the button is higher which shifts my playing position enough that it throws me off.

The only time I notice a real playing difference is when I go to my Tremonti's though that could be just as much about the neck shape as the scale length.

My point with all of this is that perception creates a unique experience for each of us. If you can feel the difference between a LP and 594, then that is real for you and I am not in a position to dispute it. They feel the same to me I move interchangeably between them. Neither is wrong, just different. Considering I currently have 5 SC594's it would be tough for me to say I do not find the instrument a great fit for my playing!

I know people can get caught up in these things, but I’ve never measured anything on a guitar. I pick it up and either like it or don’t like it.
Scale length doesn’t impact my playing. Guitar length doesn’t impact my playing. Switch from a really wide neck (classical say) to a really narrow neck (like many teles) confuses my fingers for a few minutes.
Maybe I’m just a slut: if it invites me to come and play, I will.

Thank you for your replies, again, I think again that its not about the scale length of the neck. but its really about the length of the guitar.
I have a similar issue with my Firebird. Even though it is suppose to be "standard G scale length" it feels absolutely ginormous. I think this is because of the overall ergonomics and where the guitar is situated while playing.

That's super interesting. Leave it to Gibson to totally screw up their own specs and how scale length is properly measured.

Bridge position from the nut ≠ scale length.

Exactly this ^^.

There sure are a lot of rabbit holes that folks love to go down to look for justifications for being happy or unhappy with their guitars, when it's perfectly sufficient no justification at all except, 'this is how I feel' is necessary.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

For me, if it's working, great; if not, also great - that's why the Almighty Gods of Tone invented Reverb! 😂
