The Real Value Of Punditry, Gear Reviews And Other Nonsense.

I massage my ego as often as possible but it does me no good.

Remember last year when it was gonna be the year, and they went away from what was working in the first half of the conference championship game, and blew a solid lead?

Never underestimate the power of The Curse Of Bobby Layne. It makes the Lions snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

So painful.

I was quickly reminded why I've never been into watching the Lions. I'm not up for that kind of depression.

I do find some value in old videos that someone fellow with 40 followers made to show off or complain about that one piece of gear. Low production values, no script, just a guy talking about and demonstrating whatever it is. What he thinks is great about it and what he thinks stinks. It was usually made about something the person had owned or used for a lengthy period of time.

Contrast that with the modern infomercial, where shills are paid to say great things about anything that is placed in front of them. They’re given a script with talking points that they must hit. The item is sent to them and then on to the next shill. They’re embargoed from publishing before a certain date and time, so they all hit at the same time. It’s crap without value that preys on the gullible.

And why (when it’s a guitar or amp) do so many videos feature some would be wanker making a guitar face and playing his favorite distorted licks? We always need to see what the damn thing sounds like both clean and dirty. Computer speakers make most really high gain sound the same. Don’t they understand compression for the sake of faster signal transmission?

I'm a longtime F1 and MotoGP fan during the race I wish they'd cut the banter and just show the positions and let the glorious sound of those motors be the soundtrack.
[Title Card, No Voice-Over]

"The Monaco Grand Prix, brought to you by A Tire Company."

Audio: Brrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooom

[cut to on-air personalities sitting on set; they shake hands, smile and nod]

[#7 car takes a lead then crashes into a barrier. Cut to on-air personality giving a thumbs up when the driver gets out of the car under his own power]

Audio: Brrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooom

[Cut silently to commercial]

Audio: Brrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrm, Brrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooom

[#5 car loses a wheel, spins out, and crashes into a barrier. On-air personality shrugs shoulders]

[Electric car now in the lead drives past the booth]

Audio: Silence.

"What are you watching?"

"The Monaco Grand Prix."

"Who's leading?"

"I can't tell. The lead keeps changing and the numbers are hard to see onscreen with the cars driving by so fast, plus it's raining there, and the cars are throwing up roostertails of spray."

"If you don't know what's going on, why are you watching?"

"I like listening to engine noise."

"It's giving me a headache."

"Not my problem."

Compression will only make high gain sounds appear to be more alike, not less alike, since they squash the signal. Why not just listen on headphones or speakers with decent fidelity instead of computer speakers?

All you have to do is plug a set into your computer's 'audio output' jack, and bingo, you're in business.

This was quite interesting:

Not that I needed to see it, as this is precisely how I've been using my Mk Boogies since....well, forever. It was just good to see someone else not just going "chug chug chug......."

Really interesting video. I like that he's pretty much just playing and letting the amps speak for themselves.

That Mark reissue sounds killer.

I decided to turn on the Lions/Vikings game. I started watching it. Important game, so saith the pundits. And it probably is.

But...

I cannot watch one more down. This includes an important pro game that my local team is playing in. Too much football.

What with the finish to the college season, the league championships, the bowls, the first four playoff games...and then the pro season heating up and watching that...well, it's been overkill.

So I turned off the TV. There can be too much of a good thing. Yeah, big game and everything. I'm surprised I had the will power to do it.

Damn Those Heavy Bands That Helped Put That Amp And Company For That Matter Further On The Radar.

No argument, but there are plenty of people out there that don't chug, and who might never even bother to try these amps out, if all they hear in demos is an occasional bit of clean, and a whole lot of ⚡️🤘🏽🎸☠⚡️🤘🏽🎸☠⚡️🤘🏽🎸☠

As a side-note: I tried a Dumble ODS at a Texas Show, back when they were a mind-alteringly expensive proposition at $20k (!!!)......... I turned it down, precisely because it sounded worse to my ears than the IIC+ I was already using. Then I got my Two-Rocks, and never looked at a Dumble again

I Get That But The Same Could Be Said On The Flip Side And Often Is. The Market Seems To Decide...Maybe More People Playing Different Styles Of Music Should Do Quality Product Demos To Help Break The Stereotyping Of Gear. I Know Jazz Players Who Bought A Diezel VH4 Because Of Channel 1 And Could Care Less About The Other 3 Channels Because Channel 1 Is So Incredible. Is The Diezel VH4 Considered A Jazz Amp? To Most No, To Some It Is The Best Jazz Sound They Have Ever Heard Or Got And I Can't Argue That. The Archon Is A Great Example...Metal Amp Or Clean Masterpiece? Both And More? I Think So. I Am Happy To Hear Quality Demos Of Any Product As They Are Few And Far Between IMO. Maybe The Blues, Rock, Jazz, Country, Etc Folks Need To Step Up Their Game On Quality Product Demos So That It Doesn't Look Like Everything Is Metal? If It Is Good, I Will Listen To It No Matter The Genre Used To Demo.

What is the value to you of any so-called advice you get on an Internet forum where no one knows anything about your tastes, what you play, how you play it, your experience, etc
Did you post this just to stop my long winded updates on a certain PRS pedal?

:p

Seriously, I do consider this when I post thoughts about things like that. It’s one reason I turn the knobs and do so with multiple speakers, amps and guitars. Hopefully, something I say reaches players with multiple styles, various amp and speaker choices, gain levels etc. Hopefully that makes it have at least “some” value. And I am not a paid “reviewer” so you know you’re getting my honest opinions.

I agree with your comments on reviews in general. Someone like Pete Thorn can make any pedal sound great, and many times it’s more his ability in his studio than just how good the pedal is. The demos I find value in, are the ones where they really turn the knobs to let you hear how the device in question sounds, and do so with more than one guitar, amp and cabinet. But for that matter, Tag put up multiple PHONE VIDEOs of his Cobra, and even in that low res media, hundreds of guys agreed that the amp sounded incredible. He sold hundreds of those things for Louis Electric with his phone videos!
