The low threshold to entry for guitar

I’m a trained monkey, with a degree from a well known music school. I was appalled as a student by the number of people who would talk theory and couldn’t play to save their lives. I think ear training is much more important. I don’t know anyone who takes a solo and thinks “I’ll play locrian for two bars and then aeolian.” You play what you hear inside your head if you’re any good. And that takes a lot of practice.

I am confident enough to walk into a group of musicians and jam. I may not be spectacular but I will always give it my best. Over the many years of playing in bands I have gotten so comfortable playing with different ppl. Ppl have commented on how relaxed I am when I play.

My ear now is my absolute best friend. I can listen to something on YouTube that I like and pick apart and figure it out. It’s so much fun to do this!

Making new neural pathways intrigues me too.

Learning theory does not hurt. But in the realm of guitar / rock / blues / pop music you need something else. In the ancient times we tested several guitar and keyboard players for the band. Some of them had formal music training, and they were impressive performers if given a musical score but could not jam even if his life depended on it. They would just regurgitate some passage from some other piece, changing key and tempo if needed. I'd much rather prefer the player who can play by ear, jam effortlessly...and if they get some training they become a guitar god. And if not, they are still a really great addition to the band.
