The holy trinity...

I’m going to try and follow instructions here...so I’ll exclude my two favorite PRSi...but I couldn’t get down to 3...so...here’s my 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse.

We took a vote... everybody thinks you have a problem.:D

Well, if it HAD to be reduced to three, and all of the PRS persuasion.....

PS "Les Paul Killer" custom order with 1 piece quilted top, 408 switching of 59/09s AND piezo
PS DGT with Pernambuco neck
AP 513

The near twin of "Hammer of the Gods" just misses the cut, but only because of the OTHER Singlecut....

Loving that SC and Santana!

We all know that 1 isn't enough but even you must have 3 different guitars that combined can deliver virtually all the tones you need for the music you play. The point wasn't to pick your 3 favourite but 3 guitars you own that give you virtually everything you need. I hate having to be asked which guitar would you take to a desert island or which is my 'favourite' because that can be quite limiting and they are all my favourite for different reasons, different styles/songs etc. Even though some guitars these days are incredibly versatile - like the 513 or 509 for example - I still think that you can pick your 'holy trinity', a set of 3 different guitars that will give you virtually everything (or at least 90%) of the tones you want for the style of music you play.
From the ‘variety of application” perspective, I look at it from 3 angles:
1. “I have no idea what to expect from this gig”:
- Custom 24
- RL SH Vela
- SE One

2. “I know exactly what to expect from this gig...classic rock/country”:
- DGT Std
- SE245
- SE One

3. “Fill-in gig with acoustic”:
- RL SH Vela
- SE245
- SE Angelus

Subject to substitution based on knowing the material to be played in advance.

So option 1 then would be the combination you would consider to be the most versatile and cover any situation that you may find youself in without knowing what you may 'need' specifically, the one that if you had to reduce your collection down to just 3 guitars to cover the majority of eventualities without 'specialising' for specific styles or situations. Its more about narrowing a collection down to your 3 must haves IF you had to just limit yourself to 3 guitars, the 3 that give you virtually everything you need without buying a guitar for a 'specialist' situation/style. Maybe a Hollowbody 2 with Piezo or P-22 for example would be one of your 3 to cover the acoustic styles and double up as the twin humbucker style guitar for example - maybe its not 'specialist' but you could still use it for that.

I consider a Holy Trinity to be the three guitars that you must have for any unknown situation that you are likely to be in based on your musical style and preference. The three 'must' haves that you could turn up with and play the type of music you play without taking a 'specialist' guitar for a specific situation. Otherwise its just a 'trinity' - not a 'holy' trinity. You have obviously different trinities for specific styles/situations - which is fair enough but what 3 guitars would you consider to be your Holy trinity, your 3 that you could use for virtually all situations - the 3 must haves not necessarily specialists in any specific areas but could do the job if needed. For example, you may need a telecaster tone for certain tunes but you don't necessarily have to own a tele because you have another guitar that can do that if necessary and use that other guitar too for other tones. You may need an Acoustic sound and use a Piezo guitar to achieve that and that guitar also doubles up as your LP style too. A holy trinity is different from just a trinity or specialist trinity (a trinity for a specific situation only.

Now that is a winning threesome.
