A few years ago, with the kids grown and gone, my wife and I decided to downsize from a 4.5k Sq. Foot house with tons of space, to a condo. For anyone who's tried this, the detritus of 28 years of living in a large house with kids, and everything that's stored in it, does not fit into a condo, even one with a nice basement and storage room.
And my kids didn't want to part with a THING, including their childhood books and toys. But have they picked this stuff up? No.
When we moved, I thought we threw out or gave enough stuff away. That was not the case. Box upon box upon box of things we didn't need but couldn't part with at the time simply were piled into the basement storage room by the movers. I took a good chunk of the space and built a studio, but the storage room is still very large. And it has been filled to the brim with cardboard boxes for the past few years. I finally decided to set things right.
Over the past few weeks, I've emptied box after box, and consolidated things. But even after weeks and throwing away literally DOZENS of moving boxes, the basement is still full of boxes! And as my wife says, we can never remember what's where when we need to find something.
So today, I went to the hardware store and picked up ten or so large clear plastic storage tubs. After filling them, and consolidating at least a dozen MORE moving boxes into the tubs, and throwing out the cardboard ones, there are STILL dozens and dozens of moving boxes full of stuff!! It's like these freaking moving boxes have somehow reproduced in the storage room, because they are STILL everywhere! I hardly made a DENT.
I realize that Rome wasn't built in a day, but I have the uneasy feeling that I will be building this particular Rome for the rest of my life! I am Sisyphus with the rock at this point. It's endless.
