The Endless Basement Storage Room Cleanout

A few years ago, with the kids grown and gone, my wife and I decided to downsize from a 4.5k Sq. Foot house with tons of space, to a condo. For anyone who's tried this, the detritus of 28 years of living in a large house with kids, and everything that's stored in it, does not fit into a condo, even one with a nice basement and storage room.

And my kids didn't want to part with a THING, including their childhood books and toys. But have they picked this stuff up? No.

When we moved, I thought we threw out or gave enough stuff away. That was not the case. Box upon box upon box of things we didn't need but couldn't part with at the time simply were piled into the basement storage room by the movers. I took a good chunk of the space and built a studio, but the storage room is still very large. And it has been filled to the brim with cardboard boxes for the past few years. I finally decided to set things right.

Over the past few weeks, I've emptied box after box, and consolidated things. But even after weeks and throwing away literally DOZENS of moving boxes, the basement is still full of boxes! And as my wife says, we can never remember what's where when we need to find something.

So today, I went to the hardware store and picked up ten or so large clear plastic storage tubs. After filling them, and consolidating at least a dozen MORE moving boxes into the tubs, and throwing out the cardboard ones, there are STILL dozens and dozens of moving boxes full of stuff!! It's like these freaking moving boxes have somehow reproduced in the storage room, because they are STILL everywhere! I hardly made a DENT.

I realize that Rome wasn't built in a day, but I have the uneasy feeling that I will be building this particular Rome for the rest of my life! I am Sisyphus with the rock at this point. It's endless.

Every spring it seems I get a dumpster at the house and throw crap away, but the pile in the basement never gets smaller. I totally am at a loss also on how to get back my floor space. Eventually I have to just say enough is enough.....if I have not unboxed and looked at something in years it need so go away.

Throw it in the Pool

Les, the kids are now adults, yes?

It's time for the tough love solution. Move everything they cannot bear to part with to a self storage unit in their name. Pay for 6 month's rent (or less). Hand the key and the rental contract to your kids. That gives them time and incentive to decide what they really want to hold on to.

They're grown up? Have them show you.

Doesn't always work. Some years ago (like 20+), my mother showed me some stuff that was still in my old closet. A lot of college books. I made a pile and said "Toss these."

This spring, my dad asks me to stop out in the garage before I leave. He bought a bunch of VHS tapes at a yard sale and wanted to know if I wanted any. Nope. What's this box over here?

Some of the books I told my mother to throw away.

Well. Jamie's on tour now, and is in LA, and I'm going to be patient with him. There's no way right now that he can move his boxes of stuff without shipping it at substantial expense. And he's in Europe now.

My daughters are coming in for the 4th from Chicago, and they promised they'd take stuff back with them. So that's good.

I figured that you would take it easy with Jamie - he's obviously busy. And there are always exceptions to tough love.

We still have 6 or 7 big bins of stuff from my sweetie's oldest daughter. Her husband is military and they change postings every 2 - 3 years. It is an excercise in patience waiting for them to light somewhere long enough to buy a house....

My parent's plan to leave all their junk for me to clean up after they pass..... sweet revenge.

That's every parent's plan. It's right up there with spoiling the grandkids badly and waiting to buy the really cool cars until after you move out.

Hey, I bought the really cool cars when my kids were at home! Now I drive a minivan so I can move gear around. What's up with that?

Then again, I bought my kids really cool cars when they were kids, too.

Now I see the problem: spoil the grandkids, Les...

I keep my junk in a box.

Hence your problem....if it's any consolation, I think most of us have the same problem. I can't get my 23 year old to get rid of about 5 huge boxes of mostly star war toys, and my 16 year old to get rid of a half a room full of legos.

My buddy's dad died last year. Seems he was a hoarder. My buddy said it's bad enough finding pop so old that Pepsi has faded to clear, but it's the random stuff that drives him nuts - like a car console in the basement. With a wallet in it - no driver's license, but a couple hundred bucks. He says he's going to leave random things around the house so that when he dies, his kids have something to discover.

Me, I'm going a different route. My daughter complains about all the books and music I have and says when I die it's just getting tossed. I plan to leave a note somewhere addressed to her saying to find my copy of some book - not sure which one, just one that I don't own - and take the money out of it. I may leave my son a note to tell her the truth a few months later.

We've had to move house a few times in recent years as a result of the Christchurch earthquakes. I've no idea how we came to own so much stuff but there's crap everywhere. It's all money too which is even more worrying. I have two small kids so there's endless plastic this and that. When I was a student it all fitted in my car. How did I acquire all this stuff? Books! Everywhere.... So many books and I doubt I'll ever read them again.

I too need to de-clutter. If nothing else, it'll make room for more guitars.
