    Today, you opened your email to discover a very interesting job offer. It seems the Smithsonian Institution has decided to create a new - and sizeable - exhibit called 'The Electric Guitar'. You (being perfect for the job) have been asked to curate the most comprehensive collection of electric guitars, basses, and amplifiers ever assembled under one roof. Naturally, you took the gig.

    So? What's in the exhibit?

    Please include photos of the guitar, bass, or amp with specifications and a quick paragraph telling visitors why you believe it is worthy of a place in the ultimate collection. Bonus points for links to tone sample. Try to avoid duplicating what someone else has already posted (if you can).

    Example

    Make: Paul Reed Smith
    Model: Standard
    Year: 1987
    Scale: 25"
    Body: Mahogany
    Bridge: Floating Vibrato
    Top: N/A (One-piece mahogany body)
    Neck: Mahogany (Glue-in)
    Fretboard: Brazilian Rosewood
    Pickups: Two uncovered humbucking pickups (switchable to parallel, serial, or single-coil)
    Significance: The PRS guitar successfully bridged the gap between the Les Paul and Stratocaster. In the 3rd year of production, the tonal stars aligned when the all-mahogany construction was matched with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and a slightly modified treble pickup. The result hit a sweet spot and ushered in a new era of tone and quality.

    Tone sample: Enjoy the whole song or jump to 3:13

    Also... jump to 3:08

    Millennium Dragon. First of the dragon series with the dragon inlay in the body. BRW neck and fret board.

    Well it'll need a 1985 Custom (obviously). Preferably in Vintage Yellow and with birds. However until someone comes up with a suitable replacement you're welcome to borrow this faded Royal Blue 1985 Custom with moons. Why does it matter? The 1985 PRS Custom represents the first commercially successful attempt to marry the features and sounds of the world's two most successful electric guitars, the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul.

    And one of the first Signature series runs. This is one from 1988. I'm sure someone has a nicer '86 Sig they can lend but this will do until then. Why does it matter? The Signature series was the first limited production run of upscale guitars manufactured by PRS. Limited to just 1,000 pieces they represent the genesis of all future limited production runs.

    I feel we need a pairing.
    Ok, the guitar is already in and I needed an excuse to include this photo.

    The amp could be one of several, but the aesthetics of the paisley cover, the glossy flame face plate, and the invisible (to the audience) controls take amps to the high standard set by PRS guitars.
    This amp is an MDT packed into a 4x10 cabinet. The amp knows that its job is to growl with authority and it does that extremely well. No pretense about being everything to everybody. Just an intense focus on perfecting that moment.

    Just imagining Sergio’s big grin! I must admit the natural finish on this one is so good!

    Man.... I totally smirk whenever I see this guitar, I love it.

    I know that it isn’t really cool of me to behave that way but... whatever, I’m a fallible human being and still a work in progress.

    I would love to have this as my blue guitar.

    As one fallible human being to another - thanks. Looks good in yellow though doesn't it? I'll perhaps lend it you so you can paint it like some of your other guitars.

    I’d use it as my beach/pool guitar. Hopefully there won’t be any nude beach’s, but I won’t rule it out.

    I don’t know if I could bring myself to paint it, nature is doing a pretty good job correcting it by itself.

    You could paint the case lining? That's still pretty blue.

    I’d throw in a 2016 20th Private Stock Anniversary model, because it’s a really interesting guitar, with a great and unique sound, plus:

    1. Ratio of maple to mahogany is different from other PRS models;
    2. Was PRS’ first guitar model with the 594 scale length;
    3. Was one of PRS’ first models with Gen III PS locking trem.

    Obligatory pic:
