My daughter asked us to give her a couple of weeks to get into a routine before seeing the show my granddaughter is in. We did, plus I had a project last weekend so couldn’t come to Chicago until this week.
We were stoked to see her and the show, and got to the theater early with her and my daughter after a great meal at a nearby eatery.
So early that we were basically the only people in the very chi-chi lobby waiting for ‘doors’.
As previously mentioned, my granddaughter plays the only child part in a serious drama about Queen Elizabeth 2’s history of weekly meetings with her prime ministers. She plays Young Elizabeth.
The idea of the role of Young Elizabeth is that older Elizabeth has flashbacks to her childhood and post teen years, and imaginary conversations with herself as a child.
The emotional highlight (IMHO) for her role is Young Elizabeth giving a speech broadcast around the world about her dedication to the British Commonwealth on her 21st birthday.
This is the actual speech. Though Omi is only 12, it’s part of her role to portray the 21 year old princess in 1947. And she nailed it, the delivery, the accent, everything. To make it even more realistic, they filtered the voice to emulate the 1947 microphone (perhaps using Waves’ Abbey Road‘King’s Microphones’ plug-in?).
The speech has its own scene, Omi sits at a desk under a single spotlight to give it solo, from memory of course, as with all of her lines.
After the scene was over the audience spontaneously erupted into applause. What a moment!
After the show as we waited for her, we overheard over and over, “And that girl who played young Elizabeth, wow!” from patrons.
Meeting the cast, they clearly enjoy working with her. There were only kind and positive remarks.
Unlike the musical theater shows, this one was a pure drama. What a huge experience - for her, first and foremost - but also us to be able to share the experience.
And, ummm…to share it with the immediate world here!
