Finally got a chance to see these guys live a couple nights ago. I've communicated with Bryan Beller for a number of years now, and I still remember the bass clinic when he told me this band was going to happen and how excited he was. He was right - they're smoking tight. Marco Minnemann is an awesome drummer, and, being guitarists, I probably don't have to tell you anything about Guthrie Govan. Is there nothing that guy can't play? At a different clinic, Bryan told a story about how Marco wasn't sure anyone could really play "Bluesf*ckers" because of how complex it was, and as they walked into their rehearsal space, Guthrie was there practicing it - at double the speed.

It was great to see them draw a full house of enthusiastic people - they went over big time. Bryan and I have kind of joked about how he couldn't seem to draw crowds here, but this night he finally got the audience he deserved here. Great mix of music from both studio albums, including several of my favorites, including "Flatlands", "Bluesf*ckers" and an epic "Sweaty Knockers". Marco told a great story about the song "Ohhh Nooo". Seems the band was pushing their gear up a ramp to the stage when Guthrie's amp when over the side. That bit is nearly cut out of this video, but the rest of the story is here, if a bit difficult to hear (FYI - a couple NSFW words).

Got to meet Marco and Guthrie afterwards and talk to Bryan. All three are just absolute gems. I mentioned this elsewhere, but I told Guthrie my goal was to someday play six notes as cleanly as he did. He paused for a second, then said, "Well, we all have our journeys with the instrument." Beautiful!

If you get a chance, it's well worth seeing these guys. If I had the energy for an 8-hour round trip this weekend, I'd be off to see them again. But I'll see Marco and Bryan in about six weeks as part of Joe Satriani's band.

Couple pics...

There was a TV behind Bryan on stage. At one point while they were tearing it up, I looked over to see Phil Collins singing over Bryan's shoulder:

You'll have a blast - watch the interplay between the guys. They're having a ton of fun onstage.

Keep an eye on Guthrie during "Bluesf*ckers". That's where Marco's drum solo comes in. When they did it here, Guthrie sat cross-legged on the stage - but he just slid into that position unbelievably gracefully.

I am going to see these dudes tear it up tonight in STL!!!!

I want a picture with Guthrie. I will get one!!!

Great player, great band.

Reminds me a lot of the stuff that Al DiMeola did on Elegant Gypsy back in the 80s. Or 70s or whatever that was.

different tone of course, different approach, but very fusion influenced, playing around with time, etc.

Was very good. They closed with a tune from Guthrie's solo record.

"Erotic Cakes" from "Erotic Cakes".

I've started working on "Flatlands" - the beginning looks SO easy when that British guy plays it. Maybe I should try it with an accent.

Saw the KC show last night. Stage was probably half the size of the pics/vid you posted.

These guys are serious pros. Guthrie is a wizard, as we all well know. Marco is probably the most entertaining drummer to watch that I have seen (and with serious chops to back it up).

The real surprise to me was Bryan. I can't believe this guy has flown under my radar. What a beast.

I was lucky enough to discover him playing in Mike Keneally's band - they hooked up in Dweezil's band Z (it's a funny story - Mike was pretty tight with the previous bass player, Scott Thunes, and he was not happy with Bryan at all at first, only to have Bryan become his most frequent collaborator). Did you notice he only plays with his fingers? Never with a pick - even doing the metal thing with Dethklok. It's seriously impressive. He also tells a great story about auditioning for Vai's band and learning an important lesson. Don't know if he's telling the story at every stop on this tour, but he said at the beginning of the year, he returned from Russia (40 hour trip) and had 10 days to write his songs for "Culture Clash" - and learn Guthrie's and Marco's songs.
