Twenty years ago I got my only PRS, the Brazilian McCarty. Two weeks ago, I started looking (finally) for some advice around tweaking it up for a (slightly) broader tone palette as my own music taste evolved - if not the skill.
Long story short, the wealth of information in this forum and the tone of the conversation left me with no choice but to happily join. And, with the seasons, to wish to all the fantastic guys whose advice I stumbled upon, and everyone else, all the best in 2025.

Thank you!

Welcome aboard MKI! Hard to believe you have resisted a second PRS for 20 years!! Best wishes to you and yours, now and forever!!!

One prs in 20 years??? That's some serious discipline......you clearly need some interaction with some of the more skilled enablers on here.

Lol
Well spotted… As you might have guessed, the ‘discipline’ regime was inspired by my better half. At the time I realised my profession (non musical) has to take priority and the rig was drastically reduced - I could though pick up one new cool guitar.
That said, my hands are free now (not that, my wife is still there), so I already have a draft post on where should I go next… Need to lurk more around the forum first.

Welcome @MKI “Merry New Year”.

What tones are you looking for?
As is, my McCarty has fantastic tones in its own rights… certainly for leads. For context, it is part of the studio (not live) gear, and what I (try to) put together is kind of guitar-oriented prog rock with a retro vibe. That’s where I feel I can’t get clarity / string separation I can hear from e.g Alex Lifeson (sans effects) or similar contemporary ‘full spectrum’ guitarists. Another angle may be tighter bottom end with harder / busier riffs.

So, just incremental. I’m planning to complement the rest with a different / new PRS that is a whole another exploration.

Cheers!

Definitely - loads of great advice and examples to be had here.

Anyhow, what does a man, whose first move was to get a Brazilian, get next?

A merkin.
Oh man… that was supposed to be my ‘last’ one. I sold all my ‘semi-pro period’ stuff from decent Strats to an ugly Flying V and got McCarty for the ‘silent period’. I liked Custom 24, but went to US to explore and found McCarty at Willcutt guitars. Being my merkin since then :)

For string separation a DGT may get you in the ball park.

The platform for the DGT, I believe is a McCarty, so the feeling in your hands won’t be a million miles away from what you’re used to.

This vids will give you some idea of the versatility of a DGT -

And then there’s the Fiore -

I think you pretty much nailed it with DGT, at the very start of his clip he says ‘tight bottom, creamy top’. Exciting… also never considered Santana. It may be a challenge though to find them around here to try out.

Thank you again everyone for your warm welcome.
