i would like to somehow do a simple change to the wiring on my Santana SE to see if it is worth a permanent change in tone to single coil. Is there something simple I could to to cut a wire or two to the pickup selector to make the neck pickup single coil with the side closest to the neck active and the other side in active?

You may have to physically put a "tap" wire in the pickup itself too. Which means unwrapping the tape around the pup, cutting a wire, and soldering a new lead on.

It can be done, and it's not difficult if you're feeling fearless.

Well, I am relatively fearless about working on my guitar, just the wiring thing just doesn't seems all that intuitive to my aged brain. I got one of those free-way switches but the wiring diagrams seem a little complex, so I thought. I'd try something easier.

Speaking of fearless though, it isn't always beneficial....., I did break a truss rod on a strat once by over tightening it. It wasn't the end of the world, though. My fatherinlaw welded it and it worked fine.

Anyway, what kind of "shielded" wire does one use, and where does one get it? I can't imagine it would take much over a foot though.

I'm pretty sure I'd stick with the single coil as in general I like that sound. The output thing doesn't really bother me either, because I'm running it now at around 5 on the volume knob and like it clean. I even bought some Prs p-90's but they didn't fit. Thank god the dealers accepted them back. I'd really like to see/Hear what the split sound is. I've heard the split sound on a Prs custom in the guitar shop but that isn't like listening a home if one is tone obsessed and why wouldn't one be.

Anyway , any help would be most appreciated and I will read the suggested thread.

You can get some stranded wire at a Fry's or Radio Shack (Do those still exist?) or buy some off eBay..

You're gonna want to look for the wire that connects the two coils together. This video will show you at about 4:00
