Talk me out of this...

Sweet! I haven’t tried that one yet, but I’m interested.

I've owned one before, before I went digital. Shouldn't have sold it, but with another coming in I'm not complaining. It's my favorite overdrive ever...I may need a second, even. I like to keep it set at a really mild gain, and I leave it on all the time - just enough to add a wee bit of hair around the edges, that goes away if you pick lightly and shows off when you pick hard. I may need a second because it has a good bit more gain than that available, and can be used for some nice gnarly tones. That said, next up will be a Tubescreamer of some variety to be used as a boost.

I picked up the JHS Bonsai, my one and only TS. Lots of great options on it, but I don’t use it much.

I like the EP Booster too, although it isn’t a TS style.

I picked up the Tumnus Deluxe, then the KTR because a store had them new, and after that the D&M drive. I prefer the KTR, but the other 2 are great also. The D&M is a combo Klon Klone and Tube Screamer, made by Robert Keeley. Might be a option for you with 1 pedal doing dual duty.

Having been in both worlds I gave up chasing ground loops and switch pops and went with a modeler.

Your hybrid direction is the way to go as there are some pedals that don't model well or have no model. I'm loving the modulation, ambient and TS model in the head rush but I'm finding I can't live without my Boss HM2 clone pedal.

Looking forward to a sonic journal entry soon from you sir :)

Timmy arrived today, so got it and the Tubescreamer on board. While I do like the drives in the HX Effects, I think the real deal analog pedal does sound better. So far, so good....

All of the electronic component types that make sound seem to have their own way of dealing with distortion - tube, transistor, and digital. It's one of those interesting things in life!

The H9s have a digital distortion algorithm I can't listen to, but my son loves it on his H9s, and uses it fairly often. Then again, he plays Fenders. So, WTF. We're all different. ;)

I've always relied on amp OD because I just don't care for OD pedals.

In the last 3 years I've changed my setup a bunch as my situation has changed to mostly home recording.

A few OD pedals have found their way into my life and I still don't like em. I think I do at first but once the newness wears off it always leaves me thinking I wasted my money.

Point being........hang on to your money if you have something you're happy with.

I do agree...but I'm liking the analog drives into the amp just a bit better than the digital drives. Sounds so bloody good....

It's a bit odd - I don't think I've ever heard a digital distortion pedal that I really liked (I did have a Digitech programmable for a few years, but it's moved on), but I've heard some modeling software that I've been very happy with. I'm not sure it really makes sense, other than technology advancing, but what about this stuff does? We like what we like.

Go for the board but have a digital multi-effect unit for a backup at gigs….I enjoy the ongoing board evolution process but always have a Boss ME80 as a backup for gigs…rarely happens but its there just in case!

I'd agree with the "find an inexpensive used one for backup." I have no idea what that price point is but if you are happy, don't try to fix something that isn't broken.

But I love analog pedals and if you do go that route check out The Dude for an overdrive or a Blue Note for light to medium distortion. Although they may be a bit of a budget buster.
Funny that out of all the pedals that you could mention, you mentioned 2 that are on my board right now, for the same reasons no less. Great minds must think alike :)
