I am starting a project of sorts. I need a challenge and I need your help. I am assuming that most of you know my musical tastes, so can you pls suggest 3 songs(whatever they maybe) that are at an intermediate level. I will let this continue until sometime end of this week. I am going to put all the songs in a container and my son will choose the winner.

I will begin the journey either with a lesson on Youtube or whatever I can find. Or I will figure it out using my ears.

Thank you for your willingness to participate in this.

After I have whatever song under my fingers I will then let you hear right here! Like I said somewhere else. Whatever it takes I will do for myself and pay homage to this amazing and diverse forum.

This will be very therapeutic for me!

There are a few suggestions already. Would you mind reposting them here!

My own personal favourite song that I never mastered. I did bits and pieces years ago. I think this is well within my grasp and you all know how much of a bang I will get for my 99 cents.

Medium-Difficulty Open Chord Songs for Intermediate Guitarists. “Back in Black” by AC/DC – This song is a great one to master for the intermediate student as it combines both strumming and lead techniques. It is also one that many students tend to play incorrectly.

This is in fates hands. You ppl are helping to make a decision that I can’t make by myself for now!

I think since you love AC/DC, that’s a fantastic place to start. Structurally, their songs are not hard. It’s energy and vibe that makes them great. There are LOTS of great AC/DC songs that would be great to through in the ring for this challenge. BIB is great, but I”m a MUCH bigger fan of the Bon Scott era. My favorite AC/DC song is “Beatin around the bush” but that is probably one of their more difficult songs to learn. But you want a jammer? She’s Got The Jack! That one is fun for sure! And not hard to get the chords down on.

I have done the Jack before and it’s got style and flair. This song is perfect for me because I love to play it. It’s a bit of old school blues mixed with a bit of rock. I can’t tell you the feeling I get when I play this song. What the heck. It’s going in to he pile with the other songs. We shall find out Friday what I will be playing.

But I also wanted to up the ante on myself and I am adding to whatever song gets picked Back in black. I know some of you don’t like what I like and that’s what makes us who we are. But I know that if I play and ACDC song it will be as perfect as I can make it. But whatever I play I have the same attitude. It’s a case of being proud of my playing and knowing that the intense hours of practice were well worth every minute.

People look at me but they just don’t realize how serious I am about playing.

@DreamTheaterRules you are playing to 1000’s of ppl. I just didn’t realize how big you were!! You are honestly a certified ROCK STAR. No butt kissing here. I just tell the truth. You always manage to impress the h*ll out of me.
Thank you for the kind remark, but it's not really impressive playing. I play with some bluegrass guys... yes, you heard that correctly and NO I do not play that style. LOL When we play at church, that's the approximate number of attendees and viewers. But, I don't play anything impressive. I don't even like that music but got in the band like 15 years ago due to one person (the main rhythm guitar player, who I wanted to play with) and can't seem to get out of the band. LOL We are playing this Saturday outdoors at our big Fall Family Weekend and there will be over 3,000 people there. I might need to borrow a cowboy hat...

Sorry, I'm not familiar with you're tastes (I'm a bit new to the forum) but I'd love to help out. Could you tell me the 2-3 most "complex" songs you can currently play? I'd be happy to suggest similar, intermediate tracks based on that.

I have been playing for 13 years and the most complex thing I played was some Malmsteen riffs. Not great but not bad. One thing is I am definitely not a speedy guitar player. I would rather play with something that ignites emotions in me. I have to connect with a song and when I do there is no turning back. I will give you a sample f some the stuff I play later on. The boss is calling! Lol

@FMWhoWatt here’s a few songs just to give a more insightful view as to my playing skills.

Stone Temple pilots Plush
Queen Crazy little thing called love
Rick Springfield Jessie’s girl
Airbourne No way but the hard way
ANYTHING ACDC also there’s another band that’s similar but they have some originals as well. They are ABCD I love them!
Beatles While my guitar gently weeps
The Rolling Stones Jumping Jack Flash
Metallica Enter Sandman( to be frank I am still having a bit of trouble with the solo) I am currently working on it
Blue Oyster Cult Don’t fear the reaper(short and so easy to learn the whole thing yesterday.)
Etc etc etc

I hope this gives you a better idea as to my playing skills. Those are just a variety I picked off the top of my head.

Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker
Foreigner - Jukebox Hero
AC/DC - For Those About To Rock, We Salute You
You picked 3 perfect songs for me to play. They’re all great songs. I really am hoping for ACDC to be picked! You have great taste!

Thank you for taking part in this. I appreciate it very much.

Some of my favorite AC/DC tunes to play:
If You Want Blood You Got It
Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be
Rock N' Roll Damnation

Only problem is, if you want to play along the studio versions are slightly out of tune but the live versions are ok so I'd grab those

It’s so weird that the songs are different in their HZ for live/studio.

If You Want Blood the original versions key I haven’t a clue because I have always played it in 440 version.
The 440 hz version is a obviously standard and it’s perfect but you just can’t play it with the original version. If I am playing ACDC I expect it to be in standard tuning. 95% of their songs are in standard.

But excellent choices my friend. I am loving your choices. I biased as you all know and I can’t help myself! ( yes over kill on the ACDC) I am sorry if anyone is offended. I love them and always will.

Thank you for your participation! I really appreciate it!

Great list! I'm not a speedy player either, in fact my favorite stuff to play have a strong emphasis on bends/vibrato and getting everything you can out of the notes. If you want to work on some lead playing, Mick Taylor is one of my favorites for an intermediate blues-style:

I like Sway, but lots of good work MT's done with the Stones:

These two are acoustic songs I obsessed about getting perfect for a while, and I think really good for the intermediate player because they're relatively easy to learn but surprisingly difficult to play well:

Prince - Cream

Radiohead - Paranoid Android

(Would also recommend Elvis - Suspicious Minds for similar reasons)

Finally, a Zeppelin song (because of course!). I'd recommend The Rover as an awesome 'step up' intermediate song because it's easy enough, fun/challenging to play, and forces you to work on some intermediate skills (namely, pinch harmonics) you might not have had to use before but without an overly complicated or long song/solo to learn. It's got a quick little solo with some fun repeated riffs to sink your teeth into getting just right.

Like you, I love AC/DC…try “you shook me”, Highway to Hell, and TNT..all fairly easy, but vibe, tone and great rhythm chops will develop if you work on them…it’s also a combination of Bon and Brian. Both eras are great! You should also try some early Van Halen, and some late “ Van Hagar”. The aim is the same..vibe, tone and amazing rhythm chops. I’d suggest Running with the Devil, Unchained, and of Finish what you started..as a starting point. Good luck, and stick to it, you’ll figure it out.

Right on the money for Van Halen too! I was already thinking those two songs. Those are on my bucket list. Finish what you started I am crazy about that song. With Sammy belting out the lyrics. It’s the only Sammy song that I like. Dave had charisma, charm and was just so amazing. When I saw them in concert I was almost freaking right out! A lot of ppl hate Dave but he was the perfect frontman for one of the biggest rock bands ever. He performed magnificently. Precise with his athleticism to the music. He was THE perfect frontman.

I’ll go with a different Foreigner song
Dirty White Boy
Three Doors Down- Kryptonite
Skynyrd- That Smell
Bonus song, Heart - Barracuda
I am liking these choices of songs. I am so happy that on Friday the song I will play will be chosen. A random draw to see what one I will practice and debut.
