OK, it's not Maximus. It's still Craptasticus. But as Spartacus would say...

"Stop! No one knows what Spartacus would say. There were never any quotes from him in the historical record."

"Maybe that's because the Roman historians didn't know Thracian. But it's OK, I was just gonna make up a quote for purposes of entertainment. I guess I won't now."

Back to the post:

On Sunday I felt a little restless. Everything in the recording area was jumbled together in a mass of clutter. The amps were too close together because one of the bookshelves was on the back wall; it was all kind of disorganized looking and hard to work on amp setups and cabling since it was hard to get behind them (I keep amps at least a couple feet from nearby walls for several reasons, one of which is acoustics).

I originally had it that way for a reason, but I can't remember what it was. So it goes.

Getting behind the amps to do something as simple as swap a cable or bias output tubes was a difficult dance, squeezing between amps, Tripping over cables, etc.

I decided to move things so both bookshelves are under the window again. That gave me the luxury of having room to spread out the amps - both the DG30 and the Lone Star have rear panel controls I sometimes need to reach, for example.

I created a chunk of space between them and another chunk of space on either side of the rack for connecting different gear, service, etc.

I neatened up the cables on the floor and velcro tied them. I put a vase on one of the shelves - a spot of color as suggested by @Black Plaid - and it looks good, though I'll need to take the vase down when small grandchildren visit as I wouldn't want it to fall on them during an earthquake.

"This is Michigan. We don't get earthquakes."

"Well, if we get one I'm super-ready. I practice being under the table all the time."

"That's when you're drinking."

"I call it practice. YMMV."

I put another one on top of the small rack in the back to have another splash of color. It looks nice. Gave me something to do after I finished practicing. Took maybe an hour. Not too bad.

So this is the 'less craptastic' recording area now.

The workstation area is unchanged, except I moved the vase to the back of the room. Of the two areas, I think it's the less craptastic.

"Happy now?"

"Not really. But I'm less unhappy, so that's an improvement."

What are the dimensions of that space?

Ever have thoughts about partioning, or using an adjoining space! for isolation and control?

Any updates on the orchestral project?

Nice! And here I am in the corner of a living room with a rack of guitars and a laptop!

The space is 33.5' long x 17.5' wide.

I had an isolation room in my last studio. I rarely used it.

It got in the way of my workflow, since I both operate the gear and play most of the parts I record here. Vocals and acoustic instruments also seem to benefit from a larger space where sound can bloom a bit. This kind of setup is no longer uncommon, even for major label work.

For drums or live band stuff I book outside studios, which I find suits my situation perfectly, and the cost is passed to the clients.

Recording orchestral instruments will be here simply because I'm stuck with the cost.

I got busy with more advertising music the very day I got out of the hospital in December (probably should have relaxed for a while, but duty called). I'm way behind on the orchestral project, except I've picked up more mics and related gadgets.

I recently made a deal with a Tokyo-based licensing company to handle multimedia representation for the hybrid orchestral stuff. Could accelerate the process.

Whatever works, works! I keep the guitars upstairs 'cause I don't trust basements, but they're in cases anyway, so would only get in the way.
Sweet and the Lamp is really cool also
People really love that lamp! I get lots of comments on it.

I had a matching, floor standing one in the studio along with it, but I couldn't find a spot where it wasn't kinda in the way, so it's now in the living room behind a couch - where it's pretty nice (and is what it was designed for).

Let the record show, as far as the PRS Forum goes, I have a long standing DIBS on the lamp.
When I kick the bucket, we'll have it shipped to your door.

You'll have to contact me in the Great Beyond if for some reason it's delivered to the wrong address...use your Ouija Board. Where I'm going, it's hotter than the safe operating range of cell phones.
