Stripped 58 bridge wheel/stud question

So I finally picked up a Stripped 58. It's got a few dings and scratches but I got it for a great price. Wasn't the gold top I was originally looking at but it was almost half the price so I couldn't pass it up.

Anyway, love the guitar. It is my favorite guitar that I've had so far. I really like the S2 594 10th anniversary as well but the stripped 58 feels just a little bit better in my hands and I like the sound I'm getting from the be 57/08 pickups (58/15 LT are nice too though). So thanks to those that voted on my poll a few months ago and gave me the push I needed to get the stripped 58.

Anyway, I just notices one of the studs the bridge sits on sticks up a lot. Is that normal? Does the stud move separately from the wheel and needs to be tightened down or does the wheel/stud need to be flipped over?

Looks to me like the threaded post needs to screw back down into the body a little bit? And then the thumb wheel would have to be raised back up along it, to get it back up to the correct height.

Thanks. I'll try to adjust it later today.

I agree that it looks like the stud need threaded back down into the insert in the body. I would wait until you change the strings and lift the bridge up off of the studs and see exactly what is going on. It has been a while since I have lifted the bridge on the guitars I have with that bridge. I can't remember if the threaded part is fused with the wheel or if it is a separate piece that stays in the insert in the body. Either way it should be an easy fix.

No way the stud should be sticking up that high. I don't remember ever seeing the stud itself turn while adjusting the bridge. And I agree with @JasonE that it's worthwhile to work while the bridge is lifted off, though if you're cheap like me you may be able to loosen the strings enough to back them out of the tailpiece so you don't have to do a full restring. Hopefully the stud(s) will go back nice & tight so the bridge isn't moving at all.

Also, if you feel that the bridge 57/08 is a bit weak, consider raising the pole pieces about a full turn and the raising the whole pickup close to the strings.

And congrats on a great choice!

Yeah, for sure this needs to be done strings off. I didn’t think to mention that as it seemed self explanatory, but nobody should be adjusting the threads in the wood under any kind of tension, or risk stripping the wood out.

Its a beauty, btw. A small tweak and it’ll be all gravy.

Yeah I wouldn't have started trying to adjust it without loosening the strings. I just wasn't sure if the threaded stud was separate from the wheel or not. Also wasn't sure if the bridge needed to be removed. Really I'm trying to be cheap and not put a new set of strings on since I just had these put on.

Sounds like you are not the one that put the strings on it? How much did they wind around the posts of the tuners? I am wondering if it is enough that you could completely slack the strings to take the pressure off of the bridge to allow you to lift it a bit to see what you are dealing with on it. If you were near me I would gladly fix it for you.

I had this on my 594, arrived that way brand new on both studs. I bought the correct thread and pitch cap nut, then remove the bridge, set the wheel so its about the same distance over the body that you want to drop the stud, tighten carefully with a socket wrench until the wheel almost touches the body, reassemble and set your string height. Has been perfect for about 4 years since.

I will look through my spare parts later to get you the correct size cap nut. PRS sent the stud specs through the dealer, but I can't find that email.

That would be great. Thanks.

I looked in my normal parts stash and I can't find the cap nuts I bought. I'm sure I didn't throw them out, but not sure where they are. My dealer got the info from PRS customer service, so that's probably the best bet to get the correct size. I will keep looking and update if I find the cap nuts.
