I recently purchased a PRS S2 Custom 24. I will need to replace the strings on the guitar soon. What string brand(s) and string gauge do you prefer to use with your PRS?

Hi Marty,
PRS often uses D'Addario 10s on their guitars stock.
You can buy those to stay with what it came with.
For the last few years I've been running NYXL 10-46.

D'Addario XL120+ in 9.5. Congrats on your new S2 CU24.

DR Tite-Fit 10-46 are my brand.
Nice even tone, last forever
I also had the DR 9.5 - 42s on a 305 ( 25.5" scale ) that I really liked

I've never tried those strings. It will take a good bit of time to find and settle in on a favored brand. But, hey, that's another reason playing guitar is so much fun. There's always something new around the corner to consider.

I wish I could say that, but nothing can help my feeble attempt at soloing...lol. I had been playing 9s forever on F&G guitars but switched to 9.5s when I went to 24 fret PRSi. It's more of a "feel" thing than anything else (guitars are intensely personal things). How about some pics of that awesome S2 ?

Humm . . . I've never considered that issue! I have a tendency to press the strings down too hard and raising the pitch a tad. Been working on that problem!

Years ago I preferred heavier gauge strings for more wallop. Then heavy bottom/skinny tops, etc.

As I aged I finally went to 10 - 46 (mostly).

Certainly PRS guitars are so nice my touch can be light and still work, but less than that at either end starts me worrying about tone and unintentional “smearing.”

Hey, I'm in the feeble soloing club as well! Ha! I'll add a pic of my guitar tomorrow when I have good daylight. I have a telecaser with 9s and have preferred 9s on various guitars that I have owned over the last few years. My wife couldn't understand why I needed a 7th guitar. I told her that I needed one for every day of the week! Ha! But, I've since had a reality-check, and needed the money, so I've cut back to 2 guitars - my PRS and HH Tele.

When you use the word, "smearing" are you talking about pitch?

Right there with you. I wanted to have as Cheech and Chong said "A guitar in every room". My wife didn't think that was funny at all for some reason and squashed that idea....lol. Looking forward to seeing your new guitar.

I use PRS brand (made by D’Addario) 9s. My SE Custom arrived with perfect action and great sound, so I just stuck with the original strings. I think they sound and play great. But my previous guitars (Reverends) had 10s, so I had to develop a slightly lighter touch with the 9s.

Get working on developing a lighter touch. I grip too hard but I've played that way for years so it's really hard for me to break that habit.

I had a prs sent to factory for a refret and in 3 years I started seeing divots on lower frets.

I’ll be the troublemaker and suggest trying bigger strings...11s. With bigger frets, you don’t realize the higher tension and resistance as much. A DGT is famous for this effect. On standard frets it’s no big deal, IMO. While I’ve gone back to 10s on a few guitars, at one time, I had 11s on everything. It strengthens your hand and makes the guitar vibrate in a big way; all bring a plus in mind. And no mod to the PRS nut is necessary.

Be adventurous! You can always go back.

Sure worth the experiment. I got a long scale Semi-hollow a year or so ago. Came set up with 10s......Dealer said I would never want to use heavier strings. Somehow it (an incredible guitar, BTW) just seemed a bit lacking. Restringing with 11s really woke it up. Same result with a standard Gibson length scale semi-hollow. Now 10s seem wimpy.
