As some may have read here (specifically in the Silver Sky thread), String Swing guitar hangers, normally considered safe for nitro finishes, are causing issues for Silver Sky models.

Folks are now having to resort to cotton cloths or other barriers.

I realized that the String Swing holder "arms" are about the size of a finger. So I bought some cheap "cotton" gloves off Amazon, and cut off the fingers to use as a short piece of tubing over the holder arms.

The material is stretchy - I suspect it is a cotton-spandex blend, usually 5% or less spandex from what I gather. I am hoping it truly is cotton, and the small presence of spandex will not be detrimental.

I'm going to experiment with my Silver Sky, and will report as soon as I get a failure indication (the nitro marking up). If nothing happens long term, then "yay!". I'm also going to use a regular non-nitro finish as a control group. Actually, I will use two: one maple like my 305, one glossed up like my CU24.

It isn't super tidy - my mild OCD wants to get the fingers better fitting, but for $8 for a 12 pack (6 "pairs", but no L/R differentiation) I'm not gonna be too concerned. I can get 5 fingers from each glove - even the thumb works OK, though the pinky is a bit small. So that should cover 30 String Swings.

The glove, alone and worn on my hand (I have small hands with thick-ish fingers, so the glove actually fits OK - would be too small for most adult Caucasian men):

I don’t trust anything...and even worried about cotton causing swirling/scratches...so I had my daughter sew little “socks” out of black microfiber cloths to cover ALL of my hangers. They work great...even on the “locking” hangers, without impeding the release mechanism.

I’ve been using them for over a year, on every type finish you can imagine...Including a silver sky...without any sign of wear or reaction.
She’s sewn well over 100 of these for me so far...they are on all my hangars and stands.

I’m fairly confident they are safe....

Can I place an order?

I’ve been keeping an eye on my SS, and nothing so far. Still, no harm in a little extra protection. Hanger condoms.

While I do have a fair number on String Swings, it’s hard to beat a case.
I like having my guitars out on hangers for two reasons:

I can grab whatever one that grabs my eye;

and I don't have to fumble with getting a thicker strap onto the guitar (because the guitars don't store well in their cases with straps attached).

There are several PRS straps (and other brands, especially leather ones) that are just a PITA to get onto one of the pins - the way they are made the leather/whatever is double thickness and does not want to co-operate. The other end of the strap is usually more compliant.

Oh, and since Les left, we don't have anyone to ask how much beating a case pays. We may have several who know how much it costs...
