String gauge losing 1v1 to winged tuner

Gotta question regarding winged tuners - is there a way to modyfi them somehow to make them accepting larger gauge of strings? I put the .056 on the bass side after a lot of struggle but during playing last night it slipped. Took me a bit of effort to put the .054 and so far it holds in the pocket but I don't want to struggle every string change.

I know John Mann sells replacement wings (or collars as he calls them) but they comes in different versions and I'm not sure which one to order and modyfi somehow to accept larger gauge of strings

Thank you

The largest I use with the wings is a .52 with zero issues. (PhaseII tuners need to be drilled out for larger strings, btw.)
Check to see if the cam is at its widest point.
If that still doesn’t work, your best bet is to call John and he’ll talk you through what can be done.

Thank you. I will email him being in a different continent / time zone

Cheers

Make sure you bend the string back against the collet and leave 3/8” when you cut it. Don’t over-torque the wing or it will shatter. I’ve had 52s in it without issue, too…but usually 48s.

Yeah I do that, done my education on youtube before I collected this guitar on Friday. I like the look of this tuners and for all other 5 strings it was a piece of cake, just this 6th string man. It's my drop D guitar and I wanted .056 on it to balance well with usual set of 11's I'm using. I say .054 is absolute limit here but I still feel it might pop out. I will either reach out to J.Mann for help or just go ahead and flip them for phase 2's. It's Gotoh version of Phase 1's so they should fit right in

I played 11s on both my winged guitars for a bunch of years with no issue. But, I didn’t have a beefy E string. I might have been close to the limit. Maybe John could recommend a mod?

Yeah it takes 11's well but .054 is a max limit from what it looks like

Is John Mann a member here?
He is. He posts in the Dealer section. I know you're in the UK, so a phone call isn't in the works. If you email him, be patient. He's old school. May take some time to get a response. That's why most people suggest a phone call. He'll talk your ear off on the phone.

I was hoping he could see this tread and maybe dropping a line here for people with same problem for future referance. I will email him today after work and will sit and wait patiently :) I can change the tuners, just I don't really want to - I think Winged tuners look cool and they do work. I don't really get why so many people hate them, it took me 5 minutes and no errors to restring my guitar with regular 11s. Maybe they all use thick strings too? ;)

He likely won't see this thread unless you @ him. You could always send a PM, too.

Unfortunately, you can't modify a Phase I tuner easily to accommodate larger guage strings. Both the locking collar and the tuner shaft are hardened steel.
If you wanted to attempt modifying it, you would have to grind the eccentric cam down with a very fine and small grinding wheel. I am sure that would be difficult !

A better option is to use our modified Phase II version. These are a direct drop-in replacement and will accommodate up to .078" (2mm) strings.

Thank you for replying, John.

It doesn't look like the tuners on the picture would fit hole pattern on what I have here

I believe I have the late version of phase 1's made by Gotoh

If I decide to go ahead and modify the collar - which version collar I need to order? I don't really mind these tuners other than string gauge limitations. They are not as precise as phase 3's in my Custom but I don't really have any tuning issues otherwise
