Not nuts... but perhaps unaware that Dunlop makes a flush mount straplok?

No, I'm perfectly aware they make a flush-mount version...I just don't like them or their look nearly as much as the standard version when mounted into the wood. The standard ones sit out just a bit more than the flush ones do plus they will cover a bit more of the edge of the hole. The standard ones are also a heck of a lot easier to find (at least near me).
