Strange capacitor….

Hi folks! What I have is a 2012 Stripped 58 with some questions. I posted here years ago about my 57/08 pickups; questioning about their legitimacy. I’ve left it alone for years and I’ve finally decided to dive into the control cavity and see what I can find out. I cannot find a wiring diagram for this guitar at all. However, I’ve found other diagrams on other sites that shed light on the topic but, I’ve discovered some capacitors in my guitar that seem strange. The one I pulled that was connected from the volume pot to the tone pot had writing on it as:

15000pF +- 10% 125v D O

I’m curious if this is stock 2012 SC58/Stripped58….

I’m thinking not but, I’d like to hear what y’all think.

Thanks

Not stock, but I like that value sometimes, 0.015 uF. Less low end mud and more mid focus when you roll down the tone knob. PRS have used 0.022 uF and 0.033 uF.

Thanks for the reply. I’m convinced that the previous owner threw some random crap in here (including pickups) and sold it online to me. The guitar is awesome! The electronics are a different story….. I see this as an opportunity to make the best guitar I can afford!!

Easy enough to find out. Pull a pickup
True. I pulled them both and they have the stickers that say 57/08 and PRS stamped on the bottom. 8.42 bass and 9.30 treble. They definitely could be 57/08. Did they make non-splittable 57/08’s with one black wire and braided sheath?

Also, I changed the wiring to 50’s style and my bass volume pot does nothing until I turn it down to about 4. Then turns down very quickly. Any thoughts?

The black wire is the split wire. Those are on the hotter side of 5708 for the era but the vary so much. One of my sets are right about the same. What's the sticker look like?

Those sound like normal 57/08 for the older Singlecuts. No tap wires, just black to hot and braid to ground.

Wait what? My SC58 has the vintage braided for hot and ground with a tap wire folded up and tucked away.

They are white with black writing on them. It’s been awhile since I pulled them but, all my other PRS pickups had black stickers with gold writing.

All I see there is typical Gibson style single conductor wiring. Braid to ground, black to hot. I don't see any indication of tap wires in the picture; are they wrapped up in the pickup routs?

Supported by the old school SC58 wiring diagram: https://web.archive.org/web/20130902112459/http://prsguitars.com/csc/schematics/2012/sc58_2012.pdf

Yes the tap wire is tucked away in the routes. As for the braid wire I think were saying the same thing. I wasn't considering the black wire wrapped in braid two physical wires coming from the pickup. I have a braided wrapped gavitt style cloth wire and an unused tap wire.

The newer pickups have a white sticker and typed print. Before that there's the black with gold border and writing. The 5708 in my SC58 have the black and gold sticker.
