I've got a friend of mine looking at a prs guitar. Standard 22 Goldtop with maple top?

What gives? Is that true?

Do you know why it isn't just called a cu22?

Body thickness or something?

No, it’s basically a Custom, but some of the opaque guitars, and especially gold tops were branded as Standards for some reason. I have no idea why, but basically you got the maple top at the same price as a regular Standard.

It was a thing in the mid 90's. It was essentially a goldtop CU22. It was a bit of marketing. I almost bought one as my first PRS.

It was also a thing in the earlier days before the 22 fretters came out. Goldtops were considered Standards, despite having a maple cap. The Custom designation was reserved for the stained curly tops.
