are any of the new se models similar to the starla...it seems to have a slimmer body and brighter pickups...i want a single cut humbucker guitar that doesn't sound like a les paul...any ideas from the prs line up?

According to the Internet, there are no other singlecut guitars that sound like a Les Paul.

Sarcasm aside, my short list for you would be an older used SE Korina Singlecut, an older SE SCT, a used SE Mikael Akerfeldt, or a SE Soapbar.

The SE One is a sure shot if you buy one and need to sell it because it’s not your thing. They’re pretty much universally loved.

Edit: I realize you specified new. There aren’t really any new ones that aren’t actively trying to be LPs.

The Starlas (I can't speak to the S2, but I don't believe they strayed too far from the old cores) are pretty great and aren't LP at all...
You can typically find a used Starla on Reverb for ~1000. Guitar Center has had several pop up used recently also...

Happy hunting.

My first question would be what pickups are in the S2 and SE Starla models. I have an OG Starla stop tail that I ordered many years ago. It is a very cool guitar. It has some of that all mahogany grunt like and SG has but also has some nice top end chime. I attribute the chime to the pickups. I don't think PRS used the actual core Starla pickups once they stopped making the model as part of the core line. Those pickups are pretty hard to come by.

I have missed a couple of opportunities to grab a core (one with the Santana headstock). I still want one even though I do have a S2. I know the pickups are different along with the neck shape and scale length. I think the S2 pickups were influenced by the Teisco design and the core something else (or something along those lines).
My question is, are the bridge pickups in the current Velas modeled after the the S2 or core design of the Starla pickups.

Now that Starla with the Santana headstock would be one to get your hands on. They didn't make many of those and they won't do that again.

I didn't care for the first Starla because of the Bigsby. I said that if they ever made it in a stop tail, I was probably going to have to get one. Well, they did it and I ordered it, in a very cool finish.

PRS didn't have any real experience with the tune-o-matic style bridge at that point. They didn't file the saddles for the strings. I had to do that when I got it. I contacted PRS customer support about it and that was pretty much what they told me, they didn't really have any experience with that and that is why it was missed. Thankfully I do my own work and was able to easily handle it.

I am not sure what the treble pickup in the Vela is based on. I believe the core Starla was out of production when the Vela came along so it could be a completely different pickup that they came up with and had made offshore until last year.
