I was watching a live video of SRV yesterday with my 6month old son (He absolutely loves guitar music) and noticed that SRV was constantly adjusting the tone knob depending on what pickup he was using, turning it down a bit for neck and middle and back to wide open for position 2 and 4. This made me think he perhaps had his amps set up bright for his fantastic tone. My Gremlin amp only has volume and tone but cranking the tone up to three quarters gives a very bright trebly sound. The silver sky sounds very SRV like on the in between positions with the amp set like this, more so with the 10 inch cab i use as the stock speaker is too loud for my small music bunker. I seem to remember reading that SRV used 10 inch speakers.
I have to adjust the tone knob a bit for other pick up positions but it’s worth it to get a bit closer to ‘that’ tone.
I’m sure there’ll be replies saying that I’m the last person to find this trick out but just in case anyone else doesn’t know, now you do. Give it a try.
