Every spalted maple top I see has a natural looking finish. I was wondering how a light blue or an off-white color might look on this kind of wood? Would such a color scheme obscure the top?
I understand PRS soaks all their spalted tops with cyanoacrylate to maintain integrity, so the finish options may be limited to how color reacts with the CA. I've seen smokebursted natural spalty tops before, but no color as I recall.
That one's actually got semiprecious stones inlaid in the top (turquoise perhaps...) - it's not coloured with stain.
Anyway, I have seen coloured spalted maple tops from other makers but not PRS. Certainly could be technical reasons but it could just be down to the fact that PRS don't do many spalted tops - other than a small SE run a couple years ago it's essentially limited to Private Stock and it could be that people just don't want anything other than a nice natural smokeburst at most.
