Mike's choice of an Eric Idel tune in the "Funeral" thread reminded me of a couple of songs I would love to break out at a party. I'm always slightly uncomfortable when somebody sits down at a piano or picks up a guitar and proceeds so serenade guests with a rendition on "Rider's on the Storm" or "Blackbird" or some other totally subjective tune (keep in mind I'm an aging punk). But I must absolutely learn these two for such an occasion...

How 'bout you, whatcha got?

This one if I could ever sit down and figure out the chords.

If I was a good enough singer, Derek & Clive's "Dear Flo".

There are several Tim Minchin songs I'd love to do, but it was hard enough finding one that was safe to post here:

(True story - Tim has a song called "Prejudice" about gingers. I referee travel soccer on weekends. After a game a couple weekends ago, another ref and I were talking to a player and his dad after the game. The kid said, "Nice call on the ginger" to the other guy, who had been center. I quoted Minchin's song, and said, "Only a ginger can call another ginger ginger." I was the only one who got it, but that was good enough for me.)

For a start.

Man, I can't wait to get down with you Alan... Great stuff.

Teach my wife that sentence!!! :vroam:

Look up the Minchin stuff on YouTube - there's some great stuff that's not appropriate here (Confessions is a particular favorite). And the dude can do the serious stuff, too. I don't listen to this one too often because of what it does to me. My throat starts to close up just thinking about it - hearing it gets me at a whole other level.

(I replaced the original video I posted - it kept stopping after a couple minutes. Twice now - I don't know if YouTube is screwed up just for me or what.)

Okay...gotta clear the throat.

Look up Stephen Lynch's "The Night I Laid You Down". Language issues, or I'd post it here.

There's a song I got on a CD which is choc full of daft songs... This would go down well with the right kind of friends... Guaranteed to get you thrown out with others!!!

I'm not going to embed it so you'll have to locate it on Youtube yourself.

It's called S*ck me off (A love song)

Joking aside... I hate playing at parties. Most time's I avoid it or don't even mention I play and leave it to someone else. Makes me cringe!

NSFW, but totally possible on just an acoustic:

I love those guys! They may be funny but they're easily one of the best funk bands I've ever heard. "Pants" is a personal favorite, too. Have you seen the Youtube video where someone sync'd their Christmas lights to it?

I hadn't seen that before. Very cool.

I've discovered some really cool music on Bob & Tom - the Mummies, Davy Knowles, Todd Snider, Paul Thorn, Tommy Emmanuel. I have about five or six eps of the old WGN show on my DVR because of stuff like that.
