I know for a fact that I am NOT a "real" musician. I have a job that allows me to buy some cool toys. I can tinker around on them a bit, and that is about it. I have a few friends that make their living from music. A couple have graduated from Berklee. I know what a "real" musician sounds like......and I ain't it.

While those kids were obsessing on playing and listening to music, I was obsessing on tattoo magazines and trying to push ink. So they went their direction, and I went mine. Now I am trying to play catch up to a lot of my old friends. I haven't been able to do it yet.

But I do still enjoy struggling with it...and occasionally sounding pretty good. So, I guess there is that. :D

I left the law firm I started nearly 30 years ago to go into music. It felt like jumping off a cliff.

    Am I a real musician?

    Well, I’m crazy enough!

Les, I quit a stupid dead end job to join a road band back in the day. I was fed up with how things were going and said I'm outta here. I tend to be that way when I feel like I'm being "steered" in a direction I don't want to go.

However...............starting a successful law firm and having that kind of security THEN jumping from that to a career in music.........that sir takes super giant balls of steel!!!

I left the practice of law nearly 9 years ago to ride bikes and play guitar. Now I’m neither a practicing lawyer, nor a musician. I am by all criteria a bum who rides bikes and plays guitar.

I’m a guitar player. Sometimes I play WITH musicians!

Actually, I was able to put “musician” on my income tax returns a couple of years.

    Starved to death almost!

Around here, “Real musicians” have day jobs! And THAT day job is what bought the house and fed the kids, kept momma in a Buick, etc.

Now, I’m retired. I play only the gigs I want to!

Professional is an attitude: I show up on time equipped to do the job!

I don't play for a profession, nor am I especially musically talented. I do however, know how to fix things so that makers me a technician, technically speaking.,

I left a gigging band that went on to a recording contract with a major label. Maybe I was a musician at one time? I never felt I was.
That was 30+ years ago. They didn't get renewed after the initial deal. All forgotten.

    Me too!

Pretty great: for $13.95 I got 14 albums. Then, they sent me another album every month at regular price!

    Ha! That’s funny.

I had to build drum risers for a band named PigFace once in order to get my own bands records to sell from the label I was signed to, so I could sell the records for the label I was signed to.

Both of those deals sound better than mine.

You can all be on my label.

    “You have a label, Les?”

“Yes. People label me as a lunatic.”

I’ve played in bands, toured around, played a few stadiums, helped write and record an album, shot a music video.

But... I’ve never had to support myself through music. It’s always been a side gig for me.

Incredibly, I supported myself through music, put 3 kids through college, and so on, for 28 years or so. I can’t complain. It’s possible to do this, even if you’re not a rock star.

    “How?”

    “Strange twists of fate.”

Usually they just ask me for their pizza :p

All jokes aside, I do get paid for gigs, but I still have a day job. So I guess I'm technically a Professional Part-Time Musician
